Let’s try to recall the selfless Border Patrol Agent who died recently trying to rescue a drowning violator. But, hey, he got a very nice reward: A lovely funeral.

One would think basic life saving skills would be part of their training.

My wife was a competitive swimmer and lifeguard in her youth. She agrees he should not have gone in. Her reasoning was that he would have to take off his clothes (you cannot swim in a bullet proof vest), and that it could be a difficult maneuver.

My feeling was that he had warrants and might have been trying to level the cop's advantages. As another said, he chose poorly.

They really couldn’t even try?

Folks wondering about the legal ramifications of this incident may want to review a similar case in California.

In this day and age with all the hyper media scrutiny and poor reputation.. Sure it is not safe to swim to the drowning victim without training. BUT.....the police officer should have at least attempted to approach the victim (at a distance) with a 5 foot branch or something.

• A panic-stricken near drowning victim will do anything he or she can to get higher, including grabbing a rescuer and climbing over him/her to get out of the water. Basic life guard training suggests having a floatable device that you can separate yourself from the victim and offer to them instead of any part of yourself. Second choices involving purposely approaching from behind, and/or grabbing one hand/arm and pulling the victim across your body, again to grasp from behind. “Reach or throw, don’t go”.

” They have 40lbs of gear and wear a heavy Kevlar vest. “

You shed that before you go into the water. I want to say obviously.... but I guess it isn’t to some people.

“My feeling was that he had warrants and might have been trying to level the cop’s advantages”

He did have warrants and I strongly suspect he initially was attempting to flee....although in a most unorthodox manner.

But once again refusal to comply with police directions ended with a black person in a bad situation that they put themselves in.....not anyone else.

Totally different scenario than innocents being harmed by a perp and they do nothing.

“In before the “cops are useless” crowd.”

Cops are of no utility to middle class white people.

They do not prevent property crime. They do not prevent violent crime. They only prevent YOU from protecting yourself and your property.

They write you tickets.

And they are crazy expensive to have around.

Agree. Can’t swim, don’t jump into the water.

This is a dangerous area to jump in the water.
That is why there is a fence around it.

The cop did the right thing. There was no need to “save” a person who willingly went into the water, was agitated, and could easy cause the drowning of the officer.

Take off your shoes. Take off your duty belt. Take off your shirt. Take off your kevlar. Then just leave them on the raised boardwalk rush in without water rescue training to keep a 250lb agitated panicking man afloat until a boat arrives or hoist him up the sheer concrete walls like Spiderman, or swim him all the way to the shore across. Simple as that.

Watch the video. The cops were 100% right.
