Weeks after State Sen. Doug Mastriano won the Republican primary for governor, the party is doing its best to coalesce around him.
In some cases, the support is begrudging.
Mastriano’s win was an upset for the party’s establishment, who believed his focus on disproven 2020 election fraud theories and vocal support for no-exception abortion bans would make him unelectable against Attorney General Josh Shapiro, the Democrats’ consensus nominee.
Insiders tried to coordinate a last-minute coalition to box Mastriano out in the crowded Republican primary, but it failed decisively. Mastriano won with about 44% of the GOP vote.
One Republican operative, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the tone of the GOP push to elect Mastriano now feels to him like a pep rally before a football game everyone knows the team is doomed to lose.
The party, he said, is at the mercy of the GOP’s “crazy base.” The operative said he wouldn’t vote for either Mastriano or Shapiro.
Others are feeling more optimistic. Though Mastriano has been especially outspoken about his election fraud theories and Christian values, those beliefs aren’t far outside the party’s current mainstream. Most other GOP gubernatorial candidates also questioned 2020 election results and supported, for instance, near-total abortion bans.

“The party, he said, is at the mercy of the GOP’s “crazy base.”
In other words the voters.
L
They will privately vote for the dem, as that is closer to a RINO’s position than a conservative.
Great haircut!
Pure propaganda and gaslighting.. Another attempt to make 90% of the Republican base and 30% of Democrats as the fringe. Penn. was never even in play before Trump...
Yup. The RINOS just don’t want to be in charge and actually implement these policies. It’s far more profitable personally and professionally for them if the GOP is in the minority and they can stay in the globalist club with all the perks and goodies. Being part of the MAGA movement means being kicked out of the club and the end of the cushy lifestyle. They would actually have to “work” for a living!
“Far-right election denier Mastriano wins GOP race for governor in Pennsylvania”
Now there’s an unbiased headline if I ever saw one.
These scum have no values. They suck at the teat of government all their lives and never built anything on their own. They should be ashamed because they are such failures in life.
And what makes you think the Pittsburgh and Philly fraud machines won't still be in overdrive?
Do you understand the context that I used the word "really".
Trump really did win. It goes without saying that fraud has stopped him from being president. Mastriano will really win too.
The fraud that will occur is another matter.
A big 'if'.
PA GOP Establishment is a SWAMP... I am not a huge fan of Mastriano... but they only reluctantly support ANYTHING that is truly good for America or Pennsylvania let alone the people of PA when they are forced too.. Harrisburg might as well DC Extension.
I've said for months that he'll be lucky to get 40% against Shapiro. He generates no enthusiasm outside his core base of support, which is a disaster for a Republican candidate for a statewide race in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by about 500,000 registered voters.
In the final analysis, none of this is about Trump.
It is about the unequivocal rejection of anyone who has been in politics 10 years or more. That’s called Draining The Swamp and it doesn’t have to be Trump that does it.
Just don’t stand up after your 20th year in politics and announce you’re the one to drain the swamp.
... but during covid his initial reaction was to tyranny not liberty so I don’t fully trust him.
This goes back to one of my core principles about politics: Never trust a political candidate who has spent his entire adult life working in government.
His early reaction to the COVID fiasco was exactly what I'd expect to hear from a government @sshole whose first inclination in a crisis is to push for more government instead of just leaving people the hell alone.
Mastriano is the nominee, and I will enthusiastically support him. I will enthusiastically support all the nominees. I recall Mastriano being outspoken against the tyrannical lockdowns. My State Rep, supposedly a conservative Republican, vanished. From where I’m sitting, Mastriano fought the good fight.
How have ‘election fraud theories’ been “disproven”..???
If anything they are proven more and more every day.
Same for Dan Cox, the presumptive Republican nominee in maryland. He’s somewhat new to government and is a constitutional attorney, which scares the establishment.
Unlike virtually all supposed conservatives who broke their Constitutional oath by allowing the RINO governor to make law without congress, Cox stood up.
For that alone he gets my vote.
Mike Peroutka is running for Attorney General. He’s also a constitutional attorney who walks the walk.
Well that is lie. Exactly when was it “disproven”?It's disproven every day on Fox News with their dead silence on 2020 election news.
In fact if you only watch or listen to Fox News since election eve 2020, you might wonder how Biden got there. You wouldn't know there was an election or any news on it since then.
“This really has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with electability.”
It’s also their extreme reluctance to get behind somebody they didn’t support and who isn’t one of them.
They like to maintain the narrative that only THEIR guys can win by only getting behind and helping THEIR guys.
