Staubach ended his football career at Navy in 1964 although he stayed for his five-year commitment rather than leaving to play pro football. The Dallas Cowboys did a very odd thing. They drafted Staubach despite the fact they knew he probably couldn’t play for five years. When his commitment ended, THEN he went to play for the Cowboys and did not find instant acceptance with head coach Tom Landry.
Landry wanted a quarterback who just did what he was told like Bart Starr at Green Bay. He hated quarterbacks ad-libbing during the play like Staubach did in college and in his early days as a pro.
