About the American $40bn to the Ukraine. Can you tell us in one sentence where that aid came from? Was it just a surplus from somewhere?

Be thankful Russia never mobilized, their Congress ( Duma) voted only to authorized a “special operation”. IF Vlad and his Duma did declare war and fully mobilize, Ukraine would be a heap of rubble from Lviv to Donetsk.
Vlad has excercised much restraint ( and their Congress).
That said, Vlad very precisely stated his intentions just before Feb 24th. He is nearing his stated objectives. The Donbass will gain their Independence from Ukraine, like it or not.

A good reminder. Americans look at WW2 and all the machines we had and don’t know that The German and Russian armies were mostly transported by rail and on foot with a lot of horses to pull the gear. The Brits would have too if it wasn’t for lend-lease. The Germans and Russians had a relatively few motorized and and armored division. Yes they had huge tank battles but most of the Army marched.

I suspect you are correct. There’ve been a lot of wild hyperbolic articles (starting with “The Russians aren’t prepared to fight in winter”. Really, they said that.) and it’s all been downhill since then. I also suspect that when it settles down we’ll find that the Ukes committed far more atrocities against their own people than the Russians did. But time will tell.
