A Texas Department of Public Safety official said responding officers were cautious as they entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas because “they could’ve been shot.”
Nineteen children and two teachers were murdered after authorities say an 18-year-old male entered with a rifle 12 minutes after he crashed a car near campus.
The New York Times reported the shooter was inside the school for about an hour before officers finally breached the classroom he was in and shot and killed him.
Reporters demanded answers during a contentious press conference Thursday afternoon. State law enforcement officials addressed the public a day after some parents with children in the school said they were prevented from going in by officers.
One girl inside the room reportedly bled for an hour after she was shot. She died at a hospital. It is unknown if that hour might have saved her life.
On Thursday’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, the host discussed the Tuesday’s horrifying events with DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez.
Blitzer asked his guest if officers at the scene made the correct choice to wait for backup before they went after the gunman.
Olivarez said officers were inside the school quickly, and they heard gunfire when they arrived. They called for reinforcements, he said. The officers in the building waited for a special tactical team to show up as they isolated the shooter to one classroom.
“Don’t current best practices, don’t they call for officers to disable a shooter as quickly as possible, regardless of how many officers are actually on site?” Blitzer asked him.
Olivarez said the officers who arrived at the school quickly might have been shot had they attempted to take out the gunman alone. He said,
The active shooter situation, you want to stop the killing, you want to preserve life, but also one thing that – of course, the American people need to understand — that officers are making entry into this building. They do not know where the gunman is. They are hearing gunshots. They are receiving gunshots. At that point, if they proceeded any further not knowing where the suspect was at, they could’ve been shot, they could’ve been killed, and that gunman would have had an opportunity to kill other people inside that school.
Fire them.
Hire Marines.
Dead men spill no beans.
Someone has probably already asked Hillary for the suicide hotline number...
As you say.
Parents who wanted to go in were getting pepper sprayed and handcuffed smartmouth.
Here’s the story of one of your “Big mouth, chest pounding Texans with guns”:
“An off-duty US Customs and Border Protection agent fearlessly rushed into Robb Elementary School with his barber’s shotgun and rescued dozens of children and his daughter after his wife texted him that there was an active shooter.”
“Jacob Albarado had just sat down for a haircut when he received the horrifying message from his wife, Trisha, a fourth-grade teacher at the Uvalde, Texas, elementary school, he told the New York Times.”
“There’s an active shooter,” she wrote. “Help,” she sent before sending a chilling: “I love you.”
“He immediately leaped out of his seat, grabbed the barber’s shotgun and sped off toward the school.
As you say.
I don't think liability would have been an issue in this case. The cops may have been fired for disobeying regulations, but they would probably be able to be hired elsewhere. I guess the cops in these out of the way places are not made of very stern stuff.
The Coward Cops of Uvalde, Texas
These cops are cowards. They stood by and let little innocent children die.
No amount of posturing and excuses should ever assuage their guilt, pain or humiliation with the deaths of these children at least partially on their hands.
I would not want to be around any of them ever. They are simply disgusting. They deserve to live in constant torment. They can never make amends for their lack of action.
In the world of men there used to be nothing worse than a coward and a liar. These people are both. They have brought shame and disgrace to men everywhere and Texas specifically.
They need to be remembered as the Cowards of Uvalde, Texas. I’d pay to erect a monument to their memory.
They could’ve been heroes.
Honestly, I believe these cops just didn't have the courage.
Nonetheless, a years-long campaign to vilify the police is bound to have consequences. Cops will increasingly distance themselves from the communities they're hired to protect and instead, insulate themselves among their own.
And the excuse that “they were told to stand down” doesn’t cut it. Better to save many children and risk getting fired than having the deaths of these children on your conscience.
Reminds me of when I worked retail and saw a shoplifter in action. I was told not to do anything that would alert the thief that I was on to him. I gave a description over my headset, and the security had cameras on us, so they knew exactly who it was. They let the man walk out the door with the stolen goods. Then reprimanded me when I asked why they didn’t stop him. They said the same thing about insurance and liability. They told me to keep quiet or I would be fired. Every month we went through training on how to work against loss. It was often about the employees doing their jobs. What a sham it all was. I liked that job, but they were idiots. Nobody is allowed to do the right thing anymore.
If nurses and doctors had the same attitude as these cops they would have stood outside their hospitals for two years while the covid plague was ongoing. “We can’t enter the hospital until its safe to go in...”
Heroic officer rushed into Uvalde school with barber’s shotgun to save daughter, wife
Thin Blue Line???? More like a big fat wide YELLOW STREAK right down their backs.
Damn Cowards. Body armour no good?
Maybe, just maybe, the Leftists are right—The Police are Not your Friend? They can be instruments of oppression, cowardly and perhaps corrupt. Things got to change.
Instead a mom is for daring to do what they wouldn’t.
Actually, they did rescue their own kids, and left others to take their chances.
That is beyond despicable.
LOL. what a laughably weak excuse. Anyone who thinks a cop responding to an active shooter in a school would be treated like that POS Chauvin is missing some brain cells.
I will applaud that action.
