Senate heads for gun control reckoning after Texas school shooting
The Hill ^ | 05/25/22 5:11 AM ET | BY ALEXANDER BOLTON

Senate Democrats say a major floor debate on gun control is inevitable after a mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, left at least 19 children and two adults dead, only 10 days after another massacre killed 10 people at a supermarket in Buffalo.

The second high-profile killing spree in the span of just more than a week means that Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) will be under heavy pressure to bring a gun-control measure to the floor before the July 4 recess, risking a partisan brawl that could be tough on vulnerable Democrats up for re-election in swing states this fall.

“We need to vote. We need to hold every member of the Senate accountable. Every one of us should be put on the record,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), the chairman of Judiciary’s Constitution Subcommittee, who held a series of hearings last year to address gun violence.

Members of Congress are already taking heat for not having had a serious debate on gun-control measures since 2013, after a 20-year-old gunman killed 20 children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

“The bottom line is I just watched a girl walk across the plaza that held up a sign that said, ‘This is your fault.’ We need to do something,” said Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.).

“The people that are here aren’t totally crazy. If they can’t see that we need to do something and still protect our Second Amendment rights, then we’re denying a reality that’s happening far too often. This is the second shooting in ten days. We need to figure it out,” he said.

How do the social media accounts of these actors get scrubbed so quickly?

Are there outside forces (feds? DNC?) that request this or the companies on their own?

Good points and thank you. I will research this further. However, my concern with these radicals in charge is they would have these mental hospitals set up and continue their propaganda on these mentally ill patients. It would, nice again turn into a corrupt propaganda arm of the left.

There is no need for an 18 year old to have body armor. Body armor is not protected by the second amendment. He could have been stopped sooner if not for his body armor. This is where legislation needs to go.

I would say that the selfie "he" took while wearing a dress and stockings is pretty good "substantiation".

Yup. Visible signs of mental illness should damned well make normal people feel uneasy - but the Left is doing its best to condition the population to ignore obvious threats.

Gary Larson had it right.

We need programs to help those identified with mental illness (basically all of these perps) to get counseling along with their family so they can work on solutions to help them get treatment.

How about this; when an anti-social kid posts pics of his guns on social media, without any explanation, shut down the account and have law enforcement follow up.

"Common sense social media control", in other words.

We need to do something,” said Sen. Jon Tester

No, you idiot, you need to do the right thing.

Yup, by passing legal gun control they can crow about having done something. Another bloody shirt to wave to inflame their base. Better yet if they can tar brush paint any opposition as akin to murderers.

Yup, that’ll fixit.

There’s a heavy rain of strawmen and false equivalency two-bit memes now falling on the tender and weak minds that watch the sosh’ media. How predictable.

And then the next shooting in a gun-free zone occurs because Feelings and Optics do not solve real world problems. Due to the messiness of people. Then what?

To encourage debate, to listen to each side’s positions. To arrive a better solutions. That’s a function of a civil society. Too bad we don’t have one.

The plain fact is that the Democrats have nothing.

They can be against and throw money........ that’s all

"Common sense social media control", in other words.

If I mention I voted for Trump, and will again, these same privately owned social media platforms, the ones that allow a boy in a dress to cryptically post messages and pictures of his AKs, will banish me in a variety of ways. If bars can be sued for recklessly over-serving customers, the same theory can be applied to Telegram.

There is no hope for our country so long as we allow idiots to make law.

To fix a problem, one must first determine the root cause of the problem. The idiots we have allowed to infest our government have no idea what the root cause might be.

Banning guns is no smarter than banning motorized vehicles because of the highway death toll.

The first move should be to fixx the border. If we do not, the entire country will become South Chicago, a jungle.

Guns knowingly handed to cartels in Fast and Furious.....not a problem to those in DC

People lying on Form 4473.......not prosecuted and not a problem to those in DC.

Guns handed out from the trunks of cars during the riots of 2020 and 2021.....not a problem to those in DC.

The lawfully owned gun in my gun safe. A problem to those in DC.

The problem, as it were, are those in DC.
