Chicago homeowner believes arson was sparked by 'Let's Go Brandon' flag

CHICAGO - A homeowner on Chicago's Far South Side has a "Let’s Go Brandon" flag flying outside their home and because of their political beliefs, they believe someone tried to burn their house down.

"This is aggravated arson, even attempted murder. This isn’t just politics," said Alan, a Beverly resident.

The homeowner wants to remain anonymous, but he’s talking about an unknown male that almost demolished his home of 32 years. Alan was inside along with his wife and adult son.

"It was bright orange in the widow," said Evan. "I tried to look out the backdoor and I saw gasoline everywhere and two empty lighter fluid bottles, and so I was like, oh crap, this wasn’t some random thing. He’s trying to light the house on fire."

Surveillance video shows the male in a hoodie, wearing a N95 mask. He walks back and forth on this block in the Beverly neighborhood on the Southside. He disappears and then reappears with the same bag. Inside the bag was a Molotov cocktail and flammable materials.

The incident unfolded around 12:45 a.m. Sunday.

"I didn’t know the man," said Alan. "He was walking around here like he wasn’t scared at all."

The family that lives here thinks this could have been politically motivated because they have a "Let’s Go Brandon" flag flying in the front of their home.

"I have a Let’s Go Brandon flag out front, that’s my first amendment right," said Alan. "It’s free speech. We can agree to disagree on politics." "We hope to catch him. This was malicious and this is on purpose," said Alan.

The family put the fire out themselves.

Clearly the Chicago police need to raid the house, looking for prohibted guns, books, extremist or religious material, offensive content or any evidence of tungsten lightbulbs or non-rechargeable batteries. Also have the IRS audit them, and tap their phones and computers. Obviously they are the worst sort of domestic terrorists, in this New America.

They may actually investigate. Lot of cops live in Beverly. The Southwest corner of Chicago is full of Irish cops and firemen. They have a residency requirement for city employees.

Years ago, I was on a bus on the NJ Turnpike and a BMW cut us off. The bus driver slammed on the brakes but we still smashed into the rear of the BMW. When the police arrived and sorted out the mess, I overheard the officers discussing the damage (the bus was fairly unharmed while the BMW was smashed pretty badly). The one cop said "yea...well...he can afford to fix it."

That reinforced my belief that while I have every right to fly my political and belief flag (no pun intended), that very act also exposes me to discrimination or worse. There is a reason why I'd never open carry - concealment be it of firearms or beliefs is a layer of protection that guards against hit jobs.

Now of course there is a time and a place for everything. And yes I get the old Act Up "Silence=Death" sentiment. And of course the pretty girl who dresses provocatively didn't have that rape coming to her. But I see no reason to be a magnet for the unhinged animals the live amongst us.

I know the Beverly neighborhood well, it used to be one of my old "stomping grounds" back in the day. Used to be a very nice moderate to upscale neighborhood. Haven't been back there in well over 30 years now.

Guess I'm not surprised this happened there. It's one of the ultra-liberal neighborhoods in Chicago.

The next statute covers use of force in defense of a home. “A person is justified in the use of force against another when and to the extent that he reasonably believes that such conduct is necessary to prevent or terminate such other’s unlawful entry into or attack upon a dwelling.” 720 ILCS 5/7-2(a). This section then defines that deadly force is justified only if, “(1) The entry is made or attempted in a violent, riotous, or tumultuous manner, and he reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent an assault upon, or offer of personal violence to, him or another then in the dwelling, or (2) He reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent the commission of a felony in the dwelling.” 720 ILCS 5/7-2(a)(1), 720 ILCS 5/7-2(a)(2).

What’s important to note is that using deadly force to defend a dwelling must meet one of two conditions: 1. The entry is made in a violent, riotous, or tumultuous manner AND the person reasonably believes deadly force is necessary to prevent an assault or violence to someone in the dwelling; OR, 2. The person believes that deadly force is necessary to prevent a felony in the dwelling. The first condition has two parts to it and they must both be satisfied for someone to use deadly force. Specifically, the aggressor must make entry into the home in a violent manner and the person using deadly force must have a reasonable belief that it is necessary to prevent violence against someone in the dwelling.
