Navy desertions have more than doubled amid suicide concerns, as sailors feel trapped by contracts

The number of sailors who deserted the Navy more than doubled from 2019 to 2021, while desertions in other military branches dropped or stayed flat, pointing to a potential Navy-wide mental health crisis amid a spate of recent suicides, according to experts and federal statistics obtained by NBC News.

Among a fleet of more than 342,000 active sailors, there were 157 new Navy deserters in 2021, compared with 63 in 2019 and 98 in 2020, Navy data shows. The total number of deserters who were still at large in 2021 grew to 166 from 119 in 2019. Most of them were 25 and younger.

“That’s staggering,” said Benjamin Gold, a defense attorney for U.S. service members.

Even heard about a few times when he would chew out a few junior officers for some stupid stuff they did. One on them went to the CO to tell about. The CO told the junior officer that if Chief “Rattlesnake” chewed him out, there was a reason and he should listen

I understand completely. On my last assignment before retirement as an E-7, my O-6 used to assign freshly commissioned butter bars to me for seasoning. We'd have coffee on a monthly basis and part of our coffee meetings was to provide performance feedback.

You don’t chew out a hosebag JO, you advise them, in private (face time is key). Mist JOs are okay, some are sniveling punks cuz butterbars are soft.

If that JO is an arrogant sob, arrange opportunites for the JO to excel, if the JO isn’t up to the task it’s time for the JO to “fall on their sword.”

The process is you write them, they respond saying they have located the records, and it will cost you X for the copies. You respond with the payment.

Yup

And if the JO is particularly bad, you don't protect him from himself. You confirm his order in writing (I love email) so he can't deny it, then you follow his orders to the tiniest letter.

Your dad, the ‘leading chief’ reminds me of the CPO’s that I feared when I joined the Canadian navy I. 1978. They’d also put junior officers in their place when warranted. When they joined they learned from chiefs with WWII experience. How could that not build character?

The entire US military is one woke hellscape. I never recommend to anyone to join at this point.

Clearly these deserters aren’t running away to attend Mensa meetings.

They could have walked out the door without any trouble simply by refusing to get a COVID “vaccine.”

Right after I reenlisted for recruiting duty I found out about the Navy Absentee Collection Unit. These guys would go collect deserters and escort them back to their unit, wherever it was. I met one of them at the EM club at Subic. I thought that was neat as hell. I tried everything I could to get my orders changed but they wouldn’t budge. Not sure if it still exists. Once had a deserter come in to my recruiting office to turn himself in. I called one of my police buddies and he got a small reward for arresting him.

Who would join with the leadership? Especially if you are a white heterosexual man. You are going to be bombarded with constant crt from your black transexual CO.

I had a Commander ask me for a technical question. And then... produced a document for me to sign acknowledging the answer I had given her was true and fully accurate.

I politely told the Commander that my Captain had confiscated all my pens and that she would have to ask him for a signature.

An hour later my captain came into my shop red-faced and pissed and said WTF was that all about? But I shrugged my shoulders and he just walked out muttering.

I understand CYA but that was a threat.

The Captain walked that document down to legal and I never heard another peep.

Weird day.

“I knew a guy that deserted, for an Irish gal”

I was in Adak and this cook had an AWOL sale, I got a couple of camera lenses for a good price.

He sold everything went on leave back in the lower 48 and we never saw him again.
