Russian losses in Ukraine over the first three months are likely to have already surpassed those of the Soviet-Afghan war which lasted nine years, the UK Ministry of Defence has said.
The Soviet Union's losses are estimated to be around 15,000 killed in the Afghan war, with an additional 35,478 wounded and 311 missing.
'The Russian public has, in the past, proven sensitive to casualties suffered during wars of choice,' said the UK government ministry, which did not name the exact figure.
'As casualties suffered in Ukraine continue to rise they will become more apparent, and public dissatisfaction with the war and a willingness to voice it may grow.'
Poor tactics, limited air cover, a lack of flexibility, and a command approach reinforcing failure and repeating mistakes has led to the high casualty rate, said the ministry.
The UK's Secretary of State for Defence Ben Wallace previously estimated that approximately a quarter of Russia's battalion tactical groups were 'not combat effective.'

Yes, the US certainly showed Russia how to win in Afghanistan.
The Troops and Allies we Abandoned there can attest to it, if Russia ever cares to rescue them, and they can get by Bidens's Drones.
That’s not true and it’s pretty easy to verify. The Russian military has 1 million active duty forces and 2 million in reserve forming the fifth largest military force in the world.
I don’t believe any of what comes out of the Ukrainian state media, sorry. They’re proven liars. It’s always assertions without any corroborations. Remember Bucha? Had it been real you would have had UN forensic teams there for months documenting it and there would have been tribunals. Of course after the controlled photo op everything went straight down the memory hole. Videos of Ukrainian forces dragging bodies into the scene were scrubbed off YouTube. Bodies were hastily buried without even identification. Why? Because they were mostly killed by Ukrainian artillery flechettes. It would have been impossible for Russian forces in the town to have inflicted those injuries.
What about the surrender of the Mariupol nazis? What did you see with your own eyes? The International Red Cross, right there monitoring everything. Meanwhile Zelenski TO THIS DAY refuses to give the Red Cross access to Russian pows. You’re cheering on the baddies.
“I’m genuinely surprised Daily Mail didn’t claim Russia’s Ukraine losses surpassed WW2.”
No, in WW2 the Russians killed a lot more Russians than they’re killing today.
Equipment losses are well documented. When a tank is hit you can wrote off the entire crew. Same with most aircraft.
That will get you in the ballpark. Add a percentage for ground forces.
Are Ukraine’s “Nazi” soldiers somehow worse than Russia’s “Nazi” soldiers??
That’s not true and it’s pretty easy to verify.

You are looking at old Soviet info - things have changed. I said 260,000, but its actually 280,000
Here’s the latest numbers as of July 2020
https://sgp.fas.org/crs/row/IF11603.pdf
The navy figure is 20,000 Naval Infantry
There are some 380,000 in the Russian National Guard but they are tasked with internal and border issues. Some have been seen in the Ukraine.
Spetsnaz are another 20,000. But this might be double counting as reformations since 2020 have incorporated some into the RGF and others into the National Guard.
Also the types an name of formations have changed - the BTG name you see repeated was an idea that Sergei tried to implement, but since he never served in the Army, it was rejected and now resides solely in the minds of westerners. The Orcs have gone back to Army, Division, Regiment, Battalion and Company. How many people in each is something that even the commanders don’t know - things are a mess.
If the Orcs had the troop numbers you cite, they would have overwhelmed the UA a month or more ago.
And before you go off on tank numbers - the truth is they had at the start about 2,500 working tanks. The rest are mostly stripped out and rusted hulks.
Here’s a video by a guy who researched this entire issue.

What's left of the Ukrainian army in Donbass is in meat grinder. Ukraine is losing up to 500 men a day.
The Kherson region will soon vote to be part of Russia or independent. It will never, ever be part of Ukraine again nor will the DPR, LPR or Crimea.
Only unconditional surrender by the Ukrainians will save any access it has to the Black Sea.
You're a fool.

Russia is currently spending 150 billion rubles (2.5 billion US dollars) on the construction of Orthodox Churches
Neocon slugs like you have, unnecessary made Russia our enemy, pushed the Russians into an alliance with China and have us closer to a hot war with Russia, a nuclear war and WWIII than we ever were during the Cold War. And, that makes you and your ilk freeping, dangerous morons.
So you believe everything out of Moscow media and their phalanx of “independent” journalists. I have family and friends there. The Russian atrocities are under-reported. Moscow says Bucha was fake. Not only was it real (how could you believe that Moscow hit piece on the evidence?) but it happened in the surrounding occupied towns. My wife is a Russian-speaker from the Donbas. The Russians started the fake “separatist” movement with money, agents, threats, bribes, and then troops. Moscow prima ballerinas know more about it than you do. The prima ballerinas leave Russia.
“Who knows what shape China’s military is in? They do have the manpower advantage. Would they launch nukes at each other?”
Russia and China had a border war in the 1960’s and managed not to exchange nukes. Today if China moves to retake Siberia Russia might not be so inclined to fight too hard to keep it.
Also, the state of Russia’s nuclear forces is in serious doubt right now while China has invested heavily in maintaining their nuclear forces.
Nukes more or less have a shelf life of five to ten years and then they have to be replaced. Russia’s Mayak facility that does this work suffered a catastrophic disaster in 2017 and has been inactive ever since. Mathematically speaking, unless the Russians stand up a new facility they’ll effectively no longer be a nuclear power in five years.
Multiply it by five to get a real number.
“You can hide in them caves
They'll just be your graves
But you can't get away from the guns...” Kipling
Putin was head of the KGB in Berlin
Russia is winning the war and the Ukraine needs to negotiate to end it.
china couldn’t even out right win the india border skirmish just awhile ago.
Right, Putin ran the FSB, did a major house cleaning of it and then appointed Nikolai Patrushev as his replacement before being appointed prime minister.
Just look it up. A million active duty, 2 million reserve. Russian Federation, not Soviet forces.
