At convention, Mass. Republicans endorse Trump-backed candidate for governor, vow to overtake ‘evil’ Democrats

SPRINGFIELD — Republican activists Saturday overwhelmingly endorsed a Donald Trump-backed conservative for governor at the Massachusetts GOP convention, where speakers leaned heavily into national themes and culture war debates, railing against abortion, characterizing Democrats as “evil,” and issuing vague yet vulgar warnings about the state of education.

Geoff Diehl, a former Whitman state lawmaker who’s trumpeted Trump’s false claims the 2020 election was rigged, received 71 percent of the 1,194 votes cast by party delegates, winning the party’s backing for governor. Diehl, also a former US Senate candidate, far outpaced Chris Doughty, a Wrentham business owner running for office for the first time, who cleared the 15 percent threshold of delegate support needed to appear on the Sept. 6 ballot.

Gathered at the MassMutual Center, activists were about two hours from Governor Charlie Baker’s Swampscott house. But in rhetoric and policy, the convention showed a party straying far from the moderate, non-confrontational playbook the two-term Republican used to sweep into office and continually poll as among the country’s most popular governors.

Diehl pitched himself as progressive Democrats’ “worst nightmare,” promising to hire back state workers fired by the Baker administration because they refused to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and dispatch members of the National Guard to the southern border “to stop the lawlessness.”

“We will stand tall and deliver a powerful message to Maura Healey and her fellow progressives loud and clear,” he said, referencing the attorney general and frontrunner in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. “To the Democratic party — be on notice. We are not some infection found in the wastewater. We aren’t deplorables, and we aren’t going away.”

I live in Massachusetts and let me tell you, this is progress times 1,000!

The MA Republican Party had been run by moderate-liberal mealy-mouthed pantywaists for DECADES. And the result? 3 seats in a 40-member state senate, and a similar ratio in the house.

No more! Democrats will now have ACTUAL opposition to their crazy ideas.

And whether the candidates win or lose, we have taken the party back from the Charlie Baker "progressive" Republicans.

Not going away, sure. But I'm NOT turning in my shirt.

Let’s, actually, see what happens, during the November general election. Unfortunately, the Massachusetts GOP will, probably, be in a much worse political situation, afterwards, with zero state senators and with a decrease in state representatives. The Democrats will, probably, sweep all of the highest levels of state offices, and the Massachusetts GOP Chairman will resign, soon after. The majority of voters, truly, needed for, actual, Massachusetts GOP political victory don’t exist in Massachusetts, and this has been the case, for many decades and counting. I appreciate your optimism, but the actual results, throughout Massachusetts, will be a negative eye opener, for all non-leftists, everywhere. As bad as Republicanism is, throughout Massachusetts, it’s, even, much worse for Conservatism, throughout Massachusetts.

It would be better to be a third party than a liberal party.

Defeatists in the Republican Party need to be rejected and ejected from the part and from office.

Was there yesterday - decent convention. Would have been good IMHO had doughboy gotten less than 15%, however that was never a very high hurdle.

We are going to crush and destroy these rotten devils that call themselves Democrats!” she thundered into the microphone. “This is a battle of good versus evil.”

Finally, FINALLY, republicans are saying what they should be saying the way they should say it.

Desantis won in Fla. In a razor close election and actually changed the political culture and climate in the state (and nationally) by actually standing for conservative principals and engaging the enemy of those principals. I hope the Republican party learned from this.

Before we can begin winning, the cancer needed to be removed, and that was the power and influence of the moderate-liberal wing of the party.

Their game and narrative is that only their guys can win elections, and they then make that happen by making sure that only their guys win elections.

When we start going for broke, and not paying attention to this nonsense, is when we begin winning. We can’t lose them all. It’ll be a long battle of nomination fights, primaries and elections.

Beyond hope for certain. Still, in Massachusetts only 1 Democrat has been elected Governor since 1990.

Yup, It has been all Republicans. We had Weld, Celluci, Swift, Romney, and Baker.

Of course they were all sad jokes, but it was an interesting aspect of the process over the last 30 years.

Jane Swift was never elected to be governor. She was appointed as governor when Bush appointed Cellucci to be ambassador to Canada. When it came time for her to run outright, Romney pushed her out of the way.(that’s what happens when you use state helicopters to get home.)

This is the only way we get our country back -- by purging the RINO traitors.

For those of you saying MA is lost, then what do you have to lose by embracing MAGA?

Virginia was also supposed to be lost, but republicans prevailed by winning governor, SOS, attorney general, and wresting control of the state House in their latest election.

What you need to understand is that RINOs don't want MAGA taking over 'their' party. They would rather Democrats win before having that happen. This is why RINO-controlled state legislatures turned a blind eye to the cheating in 2020. Not only were they content for Trump to lose, but they also allowed 3 Senate seats to be stolen (2 in GA and 1 in MI) and thereby handed control of the Senate to the Democrats, because to investigate what happened in those Senate elections would have led to the fraud in Trump's election being uncovered.

The Republican have nothing to lose in Massachusetts.

Given that it is far better that they be a ferocious and determined opposition rather than a mealy mouthed shadow of the Democrats.

At a minimum they can move the debate to topics they care about instead of just parroting the Democratic agenda.

That can reap major benefits in the long term.

It is better to die standing tall on your feet than begging for scraps on your knees.

“For those of you saying MA is lost, then what do you have to lose by embracing MAGA?”

Exactly! But the moderate hand-wringers will say “but look, we have a Republican governor in a Blue state!”

And we reply back, “yeah, look at him. He was as tyrannical as any Democrat would have been during Covid. He signs EVERY piece of Democrat legislation (any vetoes would be overridden anyway but he just capitulates and doesn’t get anything in return for his signature, mainly because he’s FOR everything the Democrats are for), he couldn’t bring himself to vote the the Republican nominee in either 2016 or 2020, while WE are told to hold our noses and vote for the McCains, Bushes and Romneys of the party. In other words, he’s really a Democrat. And we’re done with this type of thinking.

The DemoKKKrats ARE evil. This is a very important point that all Republicans should make (but only a handful do). Jesus said that a bad tree cannot give good fruit.

The DemoKKKrat Party was FORMED AND FOUNDED to protect and preserve slavery. There is no getting around the historical documents. Martin Van Buren organized the party in the 1820s with a good intention of preventing a civil war over slavery, but nonetheless his strategy was to stop ALL discussion of slavery by creating a party that would dominate (which it did for 35 years) in which supporters would be rewarded with party and gubment jobs for REFUSING TO ADDRESS SLAVERY in any forum, including debate in the House.

This is 100% true.

The “Gag Rule.” And who defeated the Gag Rule? None other than John Quincy Adams...of Massachusetts!
