Remember that it was a DC jury that refused to convict John Hinckley of attempted murder of Ronald Reagan and Jim Brady; rather, they found him insane and the judge sentenced him to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital rather than the max security prison at Marion, Illinois.
Also remember that in the Marion Barry drug trial, also tried in the US Courthouse in DC, the jury, headed by a liberal fruitcake history teacher at St. Albans (ultra-expensive private school in northwest DC), reached a “split decision” on the 14 counts against the “Mayor for Life”, convicting on 1 count (max 6 months in a federal prison camp), acquitting on another and hanging on the other 12. Barry ended up doing the entire six month stretch (he got moved from the soft regime camp near Petersburg, VA to a harsher regime joint in Pennsylvania when he got caught being fellated in the camp visitor’s room).
DemocRATS get off in DC; republicans, not so much (see North, Oliver, who got convicted in the federal district court, only to get the conviction reversed in the DC Circuit).
One thing the new GOP congress needs to look at is expanding the potential jury pool in the US District Court for DC to a radius of 200 miles from Washington, or perhaps merging it with the federal Eastern District of Virginia. This is because the Constitution requires that a federal defendant be tried in the district where the alleged crime took place. So, they try him in DC, but the jury pool can come from other places so you don’t have the same farce in jury selection that you had in this case.
