U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C., was defeated Tuesday night in the Republican primary, delivering former President Donald Trump a rare loss this election season when it comes to endorsements.
The youngest member of Congress, some argued that Cawthorn wasn’t quite ready for primetime as he got mired in a number of controversies that may or may not have been of his own making. He lost out to an established GOP politician, state Sen. Chuck Edwards, who was backed by Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, among others.
Trump offered a last-minute boost for the freshman congressman, telling followers in a message posted on Truth Social: “Recently, he made some foolish mistakes, which I don’t believe he’ll make again. Let’s give Madison a second chance!”
Cawthorn was also backed by another controversial figure, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. But it was not to be and while optimistic early on Tuesday evening, Cawthorn didn’t mince words when it came to the reason he was vulnerable in the race — he drew seven GOP challengers, a clear sign of weakness.

Time to name names Madison!
What an absolutely idiotic sentence. This is what happens to "journalism" when anyone and everyone has an internet connection.
Bannon said he had NEVER seen an all-out attack like the one launched on Cawthorne...wonder if he’ll have any comment this morning? (the final vote was still pretty close, considering uber-left ASHEVILLE is in his district...)
Yeah, I’m sure that his videos and lingerie pictures had nothing to with it.
LOL!
On a related note, George Costanza lost his bid for a House seat.
Who needs Democrats, when you have Republicans.
Self inflicted wounds and circular firing squad is the Republican’s strategy for fighting Democrats. That’s what I call a smart winning strategy. /sac
Not to be cruel, but I don’t want to see that video every day until November.
He got married right after taking office and was divorced in less than a year.
I don't know what skeletons he had in his closet, but he was very shaky and made a load of off the cuff, questionable comments.
Regardless, the voters that put him in two years ago, put him out yesterday.
If I lived in his district I wouldn't have voted for him in this primary, either.
Tell us about the nasty gun that shot your foot Madison, Arec Ballwun wants to know.
The times require a resolve that transcends “grab-ass!”

That’s a HUGE red flag, those are Amnesty supporting Bush League Republicans.
About 30 women came out of the woodwork a few years back, and said he harassed them when he was in college. Then over 150 people from same college wrote a letter saying he was horrible. Generally, whenever that many people appear, I assume it is a coordinated hit. It apparently continued after he was in office with the drip drip drip of the videos and photos. People don’t go after leftists like that. Some group considered him a threat. I do not know why.
It could be a coordinated conspiracy...or it could be a lot of people came out of the woodwork because he was a horn dog. Cawthorn did provide some evidence for that explanation himself.
I live in NC, although not in Cawthorn’s district. I followed his service in Congress initially with relish, then with disappointment.
He lost because he was stupid. No other way to say it. I am not being “judgmental” because frankly, I could never run for office because of glaring errors in my own past, so I understand.
Rinos are what they are (I despise Tillis and the GOP establishment, here in NC and nationwide). Rinos are gonna rino. You have to be smarter than they are to beat them. Cawthorn was not. All there is to it. It is a shame, too.
Of course. It’s everyones fault except his own.
Lost me before that when he told CNN that Biden won fair and square.
