House Dems propose $28 million to address formula shortage

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Democrats unveiled a $28 million emergency spending bill Tuesday to address the shortage of infant formula in the United States.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro, the Democratic chair of the House Appropriations Committee, said the money would increase Food and Drug Administration staffing to boost inspections of domestic and international suppliers, prevent fraudulent products from getting onto store shelves and acquire better data on the marketplace.

The shortage stems from a February recall by Abbott Nutrition that exacerbated ongoing supply chain disruptions among formula makers, leaving fewer options on stores shelves across much of the country. DeLauro has also been critical of the FDA for a failure to address “with any sense of urgency” the safety concerns at Abbott’s plant in Michigan that prompted the shortage.

The legislation gives Democrats a chance to show they are trying to address a frightening scenario for young families across the country scrambling to ensure they have an adequate supply of food for their babies. Some Republicans have placed responsibility for the shortage squarely on President Joe Biden’s administration while Democrats Tuesday blamed “corporate greed and consolidation.”

“Mothers across the country are looking to us for help and we will not force them to face this crisis on their own,” said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md. “We’re on their side. We’ll see who is on their side when we vote on this legislation.”

Yes, by all means, increase the number of federal bureaucrats. They are so incredibly productive. Yep, government employees are always the answer.

Studies revealed that 27 million was way too little and 29 million was overkill

The answer is simple stop the protectionist ban on European Formula there is zero shortages in the EU. The corporate fascists here lobbied and for the FDA to ban the import of EU, or Canadian formulas to protect their local cash cow. It’s as simple as letting people buy online from the EU or Canada right now if you have a USA address they cannot ship perfectly good Formula to the USA.

Typical. Government spending money to “rescue” us from a problem that the government created.

There was no need for the $28 million. It would save $28miilion to just impeach Biden, Harris and Pelosi, get them and the Biden admin out of the way and put new leadership in charge of every exec agency.

The problem is an administration that is deliberately creating crisis it blames on everyone but themselves.

BS. Just take back the formula at the southern border and stop overseas shipment.

Myself and three siblings never had a single drop of commercial formula. We weened off breast milk at a month and went on a cows milk and goat milk diet supplemented with pureed food the same food our parents were eating meat veggies and cereals from six weeks onwards every one of use was a chubby cheeks all grew up just fine. We also never had a single jar of commercial baby food that’s what a blender plugged into the wall is for. Parents shouldn’t be too stupid to not feed their offspring. The idea that mammalian milk from nearly every other species of mammal is bad for.children is 100% balderdash. The only exceptions are if the child has an actual casein protein allergy at which point they are intolerant of all mammalian milk including humans. Humans also very rarely develop lactose intolerance before puberty it is rare. A “fussy” baby is not lactose intolerant that’s poor parenting skills. Just like animals when a human us hungry enough they will eat what is offered to them period full stop.

This was an emergency months ago that could have been addressed to prevent a crisis. The Democrats / Biden sat on their behinds and did nothing. Now they spin to say they are the problems solvers and those that don’t support this bill are against those suffering in the crisis they allowed to materialize.

Never would have gotten to this point under Trump.

All Dems seem to know how to do is throw money at problems, rather than find solutions.

That money tends to filter through the system and back into the Dem coffers.

Then they whine that this month’s inflation rises another percentage point.

European formula is also not loaded with corn syrup and soy both of which are terrible for a child especially a male child. The first three ingredients in EU formula is nonfat cow’s milk, whey protein and lactose. Imagine that you know what whole cow’s milk has in it from the teet. Goat milk is a near perfect match to the fat/ protein balance of human milk there is a reason “nanny goats” got that name.

There’s always some type of created “crisis” with these people, every single time. They are perpetual drama queens that never matured past 12 years old and want everyone else to be as miserable as they themselves are on a daily basis.
