Putin sees no threat from NATO expansion, warns against military build-up

President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that there was no threat to Russia if Sweden and Finland joined NATO but cautioned that Moscow would respond if the U.S.-led alliance bolstered military infrastructure in the new Nordic members.

Putin, Russia's paramount leader since 1999, has repeatedly cited the post-Soviet enlargement of the NATO alliance eastwards toward Russia's borders as a reason for the conflict of Ukraine.

But Putin, who has in recent months rattled Russia's nuclear sabre at the West over Ukraine, made an unusually calm response to Finland and Sweden's bids to join NATO, the biggest strategic consequence of Russia's invasion of Ukraine to date.

"As to enlargement, Russia has no problem with these states - none. And so in this sense there is no immediate threat to Russia from an expansion (of NATO) to include these countries," Putin told the leaders of a Russian-dominated military alliance of former Soviet states.

So he’s saying that the justification he used to start this stupid, senseless, and disastrous war is no longer valid?

Meanwhile...

The European Commission is set to offer buyers new guidance on how to pay for gas, satisfying President Vladimir Putin’s demands.

NATO is more of a bottomless money pit than a real threat (unless your Libya I suppose).

There has been a war going on in the Donbas for years.

I read there was hundreds of miles of trenches.

Another facet of this situation that Putin’s fans fail to mention is that Russia also has a military alliance with several eastern European and Central Asian states. This alliance has bordered NATO countries for QUITE A WHILE.

Kazakhstan shares a large border with China, and Belarus has a sizable border with Poland and the Baltics. Yet, there has been no hysteria within NATO or China.

They will twist themselves into pretzels to defend Russia’s ghastly behavior, but any rational thinking person can pull it apart rather easily.

But his justification for attacking Ukraine was because they wanted to join NATO.

Russians, like North Vietnamese and Afghans, can be patient.

“President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that there was no threat to Russia if Sweden and Finland joined NATO”

Don’t trust him. Every time that prick says something rational he follows it up with an attack.

OK, Putards, you can come up of your bunkers now. You should have listened to those of us telling you that Putin doing rocket boy shtick about nukes was all bluster. Would have saved you weeks of eating cold Spam and freeping by candlelight.

There was an active civil war in the Donbas for many years. With the decline of Covid fear, the civil war heated up.

Aside from Belarus (which refuses to support the war against Ukraine) name an Eastern European country that has a military alliance with Russia?

There is a difference between a Nazi basket case Ukraine and Sweden indeed. If Putin really said it I don’t think he is entirely sincere.
