Johnny, can you tell the class the difference between a tragedy and a catastrophe?

Sure! When my pet bunny died, it was a tragedy but not a catastrophe. When a battalion of russian katsaps with 70 tanks and armored vehicles got wiped out by the Ukrainian TDF trying to cross a river due to their piss-poor planning and incompetence, it was a catastrophe but not a tragedy.

Young people dying needlessly is a tragedy.

From the pictures, it appears 4 tanks and about 50 other armored vehicles, and some support vehicles were wiped out.

An opposed river crossing is a dangerous business.

It appeared to me that most were destroyed with artillery, although the Bayraktar drones could have been used as well.

The question is, where is the vaunted Russian artillery?

Where was Russian counter-battery fire?

Where were Russian drones to find the Ukrainian artillery and neutralize it during the dangerous crossing?

Perhaps this was a weird example of Russian incompetence.

Or, perhaps, it is an example of the Russian military's inabililty to adapt to warfare where drones are ubiquitous, and it is impossible to hide or achieve surprise in an armored column.

If this is true then the mighty Ruskie military is not what it seems to be. Although they have great missiles. Sooner or later this war is going nuclear.

Needlessly?
Ukrainians defending their freedom would say the young Russian invaders very much need to die.

Why would it have to go nuclear?

“Where was Russian counter-battery fire?”

The first casualty?

The new NATO standard Artillery (American M777 howitzers) have begun firing. Coincidentally, we see many more vehicles destroyed in Artillery strikes.

It may also be a factor in the successful Ukrainian counteroffensive out of Kharkiv.

More will be joining the battle in the coming weeks.

The drones are being used as spotters for the artillery.

When those "young people" behave like this, then no, it's not a tragedy when they get taken out:

Seldom mentioned is the fact that the battlefield is monitored from orbit all the time. You can’t step outside for a cigarette without it being observed by a satellite, and some analyst taking note and passing it along.

There was a story during World War 2 of a Red Army unit composed of men from Central Asia, called “slant eyes”, trying to cross a river. No crossing g equipment arrived so the unit commander contacted his superior. The superior insisted the men swim across despite the fact none of the men knew how to swim. There was a timetable to follow. All the men drowned.

The drones are being used as spotters for the artillery.

Yes, a very important function for drones.

From the pictures, it is obvious the artillery fire was precise, not a mass barrage.

There were a lot of trees still standing.

That sounds about right. Red Army doctrine basically boiled down to “we have more bodies than you have bullets.”

Two very rich mobsters, Putin and Zelenski, decide to have a mob war and kill thousands of young people, and old, in the process. My hope is neither survives this.

The junior American mobster, Vindman, Zelenski's associate also needs to be on the list.

Ivan is trying to fight a “limited” proxy war against NATO (USA) real time survelience (drones, satellite, AWACs, etc.) The Ukes are using the most advanced anti-armour, anti-air and precision smart weapons with NATO command and control. The only way Ivan can win this is with a massive total invasion on all fronts which would cause massive loses on both sides. Ain’t going to happen. The same goes for China invading Taiwan.

The story is total bullshit. You will know why if you dive a little deeper than UK propaganda. It’s on the level of zooming onto Normandy Beach to take a photo of some sunk landing craft, and declaring D-Day to be doomed to total failure. Meanwhile, up and down the beach, 100s of more landing craft are getting ashore and unloading troops.

By far, head and shoulders above the propaganda from NATO or Russia, is the military analysis of Singapore-based vlogger Defense Politics Asia. He does a deep dive into the pontoon bridge imagery.

So, you can just stick with surface-level propaganda (D-Day is doomed!) or dig deeper and get the better picture.
