Russia warns of ‘military’ retaliation measures over Finland Nato application

Russia has warned that it will have to take “military-technical” steps in response to Finland’s application to join Nato.

The foreign ministry accused the military alliance of seeking to create “another flank for the military threat to our country”.

“Helsinki should be aware of its responsibility and the consequences of such a move,” the ministry added.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “The expansion of Nato and the approach of the alliance to our borders does not make the world and our continent more stable and secure”.

When asked whether Finland’s accession to the military alliance would be considered a threat toward Russia, Peskov answered: “Definitely”.

Earlier on Thursday, Finnish leaders said they were in favour of joining Nato and a formal decision would be made this weekend.

Finland, which shares an 810 mile border and a difficult past with Russia, has gradually stepped up its cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as a partner since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

Shadowlands1960 The Russian Federation has the power to destroy the United States several times over.

You guys in the Kremlin just think that. But that's a fallacy as shown by their failures in Ukraine. Russia's military is corrupt - the money was not spent on upgrades. It is badly maintained to the point that stuff falls apart. It is badly equipped - using 40 year old trucks and equipment that was not even maintained.

There is ZERO need for the USA to send troops into Ukraine -- the Ukrainians are smashing Putin's hordes by themselve

Капитан Джонас We get it: you hate white people and christians

You think that being against Putin's war is being anti-white and anti-Christian?

So you think Putin is a great white Christian? with his Kadyrov brigade?

“I don’t see how an ‘honest’ poll could be done, but I would be interested in seeing the correlation (if any) between vaccine ‘belief/trust’ and posture on this war.”

****

Yes, 100% I agree will all you said.

Certainly there are nefarious groups pushing for war, but the Freepers who are listening to them are sleep walking, as you said.

“Always wondered how animals could be dumb enough to fall for that.”

They don’t see a big picture like we do. Their visual processor is small and generally has good granularity in a tiny window of their visual field. So, they get an impression of size, and they evaluate whether to proceed based on inadequate data. It’s better to default to not engaging as the error rather than engaging and finding out the target really is too big.

This is what Putin’s democracy looks like

One dictator - Putie - in power for 22 years

Oligarchs feeding off the population

One of the most corrupt nations in the world.

Ukraine is also corrupt - but not as bad as Russia AND it is improving.. Ukraine is not a clean democracy but it IS improving.

So you have Russia sliding backwards into despotism and Ukraine crawling out of corruption and you prefer Russia?

The politicians?

The people, rather. This is a matter of mega millions, not some politicians. These characters follow popular opinion, much more so in Europe than the US, which is way more corrupted by its “elite”. You have to be in Europe for a good while to understand that.

I have been in ten Spanish cities over the last six weeks. The peoples opinions are genuine. Everywhere I have seen Ukrainian flags hanging from balconies, manifestations in the plazas, art in the cafe’s, ribbons, pins and “Slava Ukrainia”. Every political party is on the same page even ultra-nationalist EU-hating Vox.

Where do you get your extremely dumb ideas? Are you an eye witness to European public opinion?

They could be the Wheat Capital and Energy supplier to Europe

They could have been more. They could have been as rich per capita as Norway. Russians are smart, but the intelligence runs from Putin's corruption

Putin has destroyed Russia

I have long suspected that the PRC stood behind Soros’s projects in the USA, so can’t disagree with you.

Comrade Jonas Except NATO IS owned totally by the US, that is not even debatable

Actually it isn't - the head of NATO is not an American. NATO does not involve itself in American wars by default - and that has been a cause of complaints on this very forum

NATO gives tiny Estonia an equal voice to the USA (another source of disgruntlement on this very forum)

this is UTTERLY unlike Russia's Federal republics.

But it isn’t the same.

In 1962, the USSR was sending nuclear missiles to Cuba

In 2021, Ukraine’s accession to NATO was rejected. In fact, until Putin’s invasion, there were no American military troops in NATO countries that joined after 1997. No offensive missiles, forget about nuclear missiles, were in NATO countries that joined after 1997, forget about plans for Ukraine.

Well I would be a little more believing of what the Russians are saying right now because they just laid out a case for the West engaging in biological warfare which would mean they could respond with anything

Right. We would never dare treat the PRC like we are treating the Russian Federation, and the ironic thing is that it is China that stands most to benefit from all of this.

Why is Finland joining NATO “insane”?

Finland has been invaded twice by Russia - as NoseWanking pointed out above.

Finland has lost territory to Russia

Finland see’s Putin’s regime as not trustworthy and is looking to safeguard itself.

Why is it “insane”?

If a bullied child decides to team up with other bullied children to stand up to the bully - is that “insane” in your opinion?
