Russia warns of ‘military’ retaliation measures over Finland Nato application

Russia has warned that it will have to take “military-technical” steps in response to Finland’s application to join Nato.

The foreign ministry accused the military alliance of seeking to create “another flank for the military threat to our country”.

“Helsinki should be aware of its responsibility and the consequences of such a move,” the ministry added.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “The expansion of Nato and the approach of the alliance to our borders does not make the world and our continent more stable and secure”.

When asked whether Finland’s accession to the military alliance would be considered a threat toward Russia, Peskov answered: “Definitely”.

Earlier on Thursday, Finnish leaders said they were in favour of joining Nato and a formal decision would be made this weekend.

Finland, which shares an 810 mile border and a difficult past with Russia, has gradually stepped up its cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as a partner since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

Not so big on geography are you? Your interpretation of that world map ignores that most of that north area is wasteland. It’s like saying Carthage wasn’t encircled by Rome because of all that uninhabited dessert to their South.

The hub of Russian power has always been in her Northwest... that area is being encircled.

it is a strange phenomenon. someone else on this thread is hallucinating my opinions now and acting like I actually said them. this is actually a key tell for cognitive dissonance.

fr is not nearly as useful as it once was with having to wade through all the fighting and name-calling and ad hominem attacks.

Agree with everything you say. In fact Russian paranoia regarding her borders has become a cliche. It’s also what makes all this war mongering VERY dangerous.

Let’s see — every one of my posts on Ukraine has consistently said

“the war is bad”

“Russia needs to leave Ukraine and end the war”

“I feel sorry for the Russian boys being killed for Putin’s ego”

“No American troops are needed in Ukraine. The Ukrainians are kicking Putin’s butt on their own”

So where is the hypocrisy?

And why are you supporting Putin’s invasion of a neighboring state?

Russia then needs to have been friendly to her neighbours.

Instead they have threatened, invaded and bombed their neighbors.

Carthage was actually encircling Rome for most of the period of their wars. Carthage held the Western Med, and some of its off-and-on allies held the Eastern Med.

Rome did have more of the advantage of a central position, which is another way to look at this.

Russia has nukes, and for that reason alone knows that NATO would never try to invade Russia.

This has never been about Russia feeling militarily threatened with invasion. That's just a weak-ass excuse for their unjustified aggression against their neighbors.

Which is why Russia needs an “intervention”.
Why should everyone have to put up with their s***?
They can learn to at least pretend to play nice.

Carthage was expelled from Sicily as a result of the 1st War.... the 2nd War was essentially Hannibal rummaging around the Italian peninsula destroying armies... of course my reference was to the 3rd War when Carthage itself was encircled and destroyed...

I don't, but the Pope blames NATO encroachment and I agree.

Okay, then Japan and Germany won the war too. They kicked ass and remained as the countries.

Imperial Japan ended at surrender. The state of Japan today is a different country, constitution and legal structure than the prior one. Culture is the similar, but even that is vastly different after the occupation. The German Reich, as a governmental body, ended in what was West Germany (some old East German colleagues used to joke they just swapped the swastika for the red star, but they had some wicked senses of humor). As a political entity, the prior German state was gone. Finland last territory, but not their government. It is a testament to them that they managed to fight the Soviets WITH the Nazi's, yet were able to keep their government together postwar. For over 70 years Finland kept a middle path as a western aligned nation neutral with the Soviets. It worked. After the liberation of Estonia and Lithuania, they increased their ties with their Baltic cousins. But in the last ten years or so they are seeing that Russia is wanting to reclaim Finland. The old order of neutrality is not holding. I am personally not sure that NATO membership is wise. The US is a broken reed, and it is not wise to really on us. But my Finnish cousins have been quietly saying for a few years now this was coming. I did not believe it till now.

Putting up with ‘s*** ‘ is in the nature of big power politics. When you stop ‘putting up’ with it, is when the bullets (or in this case, missiles) fly.

What we need is a security agreement that benefits all parties. I personally don’t see why these East European governments can’t work one out.

Ukraine and Finland are totally different cases from the Russian perspective. Ukraine has been belligerent since day one in 1991 based on the idea that they are superior and were brought down by Russia. The more their idea was proving wrong due to their economic collapse after independence, the more bitter they became and absolutely hostile after 2014, hence Russia was considering them a threat.
There were no such dynamics in Finland and nobody in Russia viewed them as a threat. If they are going to join NATO, it is going to change, of course.

The US has the same capability to destroy all major military bases and significant cities in Russia, as does the UK and France. No one wins. Any survivors will wish they were dead.
The Finns and the Swedes have decided to join NATO as a result of Russian idiocy. Let them determine their own path. It appears that you prefer to leave them under the shadow of the Bear on their own.

You mean the braindead Europeans who hate freedom of speech, hate their own culture and race and welcome in middle eastern terrorists are slurping the NATO propaganda without question? What a shock.

Because one party insists on openly threatening everyone else at every opportunity. This is not a matter of this year, but of the last two decades.

Russia does not want to “work it out”. The Russian government has had every opportunity to establish friendly relations with Nato and EU countries, through all those long years when Nato slept, with minimal defense budgets and stood-down forces.

Russia is just a psycho neighbor.

Actually I said what I wanted in my previous post... i.e: A security agreement in Eastern Europe that benefits all parties and averts the need for the USA to further enmesh themselves in this entangling antiquated alliance... NATO.
