Pennsylvania’s Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman is expected to announce on Thursday that he is dropping out of the governor’s race and will be endorsing Lou Barletta to be the Republican gubernatorial nominee, according to a source familiar with the campaign.
Corman, whose rankings in the polls have been lagging in the crowded nine-person field for the GOP nomination, wants to see the party come together and elect a candidate who can beat presumptive Democratic nominee Josh Shapiro in November for the open governor’s seat, the source said. In Corman’s mind, that is Barletta, a former Hazelton mayor and U.S. congressman.
“We have a chance to elect a governor in November and the only way that can happen is if they elect someone who can win,” the source said. “Jake believes it’s time for him and his fellow candidates to unite behind Lou.”
Republican rival Doug Mastriano has emerged in the polls as the frontrunner with Barletta at times a distant second. Fears are rising within party ranks that if Mastriano were to win the nomination, he would lose by double digits to Shapiro.
Party insiders met earlier in the week to discuss the idea of coalescing around an alternative to Mastriano in hopes of heading off a victory for the far-right senator from Franklin County, according to a report in The Philadelphia Inquirer.
This is the second time the 57-year-old Corman, who is retiring from the Senate at the end of the year after serving six four-year terms, has decided to withdraw from the race. He went so far as to file paperwork to have his name removed from the ballot but he said former President Donald Trump reached out to him and encouraged him to stay in the race and fight.
Good move, Jake!
Pennsylvania Ping!
Please ping me with articles of interest.
FReepmail me to be added to the list.
Agree....good move.
We need more of this.
“Good move, Jake!“
It is, l wish more would do this. Vote splitting has done so much damage.
Go Doug. All the way.
These are legitimate fears. If Doug Mastriano was the worst Republican in Pennsylvania, life would be great. I prefer Barletta to Mastriano because I do agree that Mastriano would get his ass handed to him in November.
Nothing personal against Mastriano (I do have some real problems with him), but I've been saying for months that no Republican candidate for governor or senator who is currently serving in the PA legislature has a chance in hell of winning a statewide race in November.
Looking to keep Mastriano out..
Good news!

Yup, like in the GA Senate runoff.
Several others should drop out too. I’ve met most of them at the Tea Party. There are too many in the race. I support Lou.
So, as one a loooong way from they Keystone State, both Barletta and Mastriano are OK to root for., but there may be some sentiment that Barletta will be stronger in the general. Is this correct ?
I’ve read elsewhere that Mastriano is the better conservative.
Who’s the likely D ? is that the wacko AG ? Sussman or whatever ?
The “wack AG” John “Shylock” Shapiro is the one and only D candidate and has a huge war chest.
Barletta was a tighten the boarders conservative as Mayor of Hazelton back when Trump will still building towers.
Mastriano was salt in the bathing suit for Governor Wolf about business shut-downs during COVID....BUT early in the pandemic he favored ignoring HIPPA and doing very extensive and invasive contact tracing. Plus he supported Act 77 which brought no-excuse mail-in voting.
PA is hiring its Chief Executive. I look for executive branch experience, business experience, etc....not legislative branch experience.
Lou has my vote.
The Republicans who control the PA legislature are basically a clown show. Lou Barletta has a big advantage in the general election in that he has never been a part of it. That’s my take.
great assessment....thanks
Is PA still purple ? or moving red ? As I understand it, it’s Philly / Pittsburgh and then the sane remainder of the state.
With the bang up job Biden and the Ds have done I can’t imagine much outside of core Philly still going blue.
We still call the midstate and upper tier the “red T”...hard to say if there is a shift.
Shapiro is from a Phillyburb County so SE PA is his power base. That could be another reason for nominating Barletta because his home region is adjacent.
So there’s too many good guys to choose from in the PA Gov. race, but nothing but turds in the PA Senate race. This wasn’t thought out very well. One of these guys should have run for Senate.
The way I see it Josh Shorty Shapiro ran the steal in the Philadelphia area. The guy is a slimy as they come!
Master of a thousand mules.
