KYIV/LONDON, May 10 (Reuters) - Ukraine said on Tuesday it would suspend the flow of gas through a transit point which it said delivers almost a third of the fuel piped from Russia to Europe through Ukraine, blaming Moscow for the move and saying it would move the flows elsewhere.
Ukraine has remained a major transit route for Russian gas to Europe even after Moscow's invasion.
GTSOU, which operates Ukraine's gas system, said it would stop shipments via the Sokhranivka route from Wednesday, declaring "force majeure", a clause invoked when a business is hit by something beyond its control.
But Gazprom (GAZP.MM), which has a monopoly on Russian gas exports by pipeline, said it was "technologically impossible" to shift all volumes to the Sudzha interconnection point further west, as GTSOU proposed.
GTSOU CEO Sergiy Makogon told Reuters that Russian occupying forces had started taking gas transiting through Ukraine and sending it to two Russia-backed separatist regions in the country's east. He did not cite evidence.

The natural gas is used for more than heating.
Germany was the largest consumer of natural gas in Europe in 2019, consuming 8.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of natural gas. Natural gas represented 25% of Germany’s total primary energy consumption, and consumption of natural gas increased slightly in 2019.
They are moving to reduce reliance on Russian gas but if they did it immediately overnight as you suggest it would absolute destroy their economies. So you are totally surprised and perplexed that they don’t destroy their economy.
That 'unwillingness to destroy their economy' didn't stop Germany from icing certification on the Nord Stream 2 project back in February.
The fact that Europeans will take years to wean off of Russian gas is not the perplexing point: rather, that they apparently expected no debilitating consequences from either sanctioning Russia (the source of the gas in question) or continuing to pay for transit of Russian gas through Ukraine (when said payments fund the same belligerent they want Ukraine to defeat).

Europe is free to negotiate the problem by opening NSII which is a bridge too far but are European consumers going to tolerate it or not is a big question.

My first thought - the EU has coerced Zelensky to shut off the pipe to punish Orban, who is a defiant Conservative in the neo-Marxist EU.
When this entire war started, one of the Russian complaints going back 8-10 years was the pipeline transit fees paid to the Ukraine. Russia is getting closer to ending this war with Ukraine. Without this revenue from Russia energy and loss of the Donbas region, for good, means that their economy is not going to recover the loss of those fees they charged the unhappy Russians. On another note, Russia already said they were going to shut down the pipeline to Europe - maybe this bluster is just the Ukraine trying to spin a happy face on the end of energy going to the EU from Russia via any route.
