Angry mobs in Sri Lanka have burned down several homes belonging to the ruling Rajapaksas and MP's, following clashes with government supporters.

The violence capped a day of unrest that saw PM Mahinda Rajapaksa quit amid mass protests at his government's handling of the economic crisis.

But it failed to assuage demonstrators, who attempted to storm his official residence while he was holed up inside.

Five people have died and more than 190 have been injured since Monday.

An island-wide curfew has been extended to Wednesday morning as authorities seek to quell the violence.

Many are still calling for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, brother of Mahinda, to leave office, following weeks of escalating demonstrations over soaring prices and power cuts since last month.

On Monday, government supporters clashed violently with protesters in the capital Colombo outside Mahinda Rajapaksa's Temple Trees residence, and then at the main protest site at Galle Face Green.

Police and riot squads were deployed, and tear gas and water cannons were fired at government supporters after they breached police lines and attacked protesters using sticks and poles.

Angry demonstrators retaliated, attacking government supporters and targeting ruling party MP's, including one who shot two people after a mob swarmed his car and then killed himself, according to Sri Lankan police...

“ Moreover, the decision to ban chemical fertilisers overnight created a huge backlash, especially from farmers who were critical of the government’s decision to ban chemical fertilizers without a proper mechanism or planning. The decision was allegedly taken by Gotabaya who had consulted Indian Vandana Shiva instead of listening to subject matter experts on agriculture who repeatedly urged him to avoid such an ill-fated move.[20] Gotabaya intended to make Sri Lanka as the first country in the world to follow 100% organic farming. However, the chemical fertilizer ban turned out to be costly as harvest was severely hampered triggering acute food shortages throughout the country.”

Sri Lanka’s decision to comply with the fantasies of environmentalists and abandon chemical fertilizers for organic farming also proved an unmitigated disaster, leading to food shortages and spiraling prices.

No, Tamils are the largest minority group in Sri Lanka.

The largest ethnic group are the Sinhalese (Ceylonese).
They speak different languages and mainly have different religions, the Sinhalese being mainly Buddhist and the Tamils mainly Hindu.

This is what the “green new deal” really is. Starvation and then worse.

Great job Sri Lanka, hope more white (or white adjacent) lefties will come along and tell you what you all should do next.

Hint: Constanza rule - the opposite of whatever they say.

That’s one heck of an insurrection. Torching the politicians homes. People are dangerous when they have nothing to lose.

Critics say the roots of the crisis, the worst in several decades, lie in economic mismanagement by successive governments that created and sustained a twin deficit – a budget shortfall alongside a current account deficit.

“Sri Lanka is a classic twin deficits economy,” said a 2019 Asian Development Bank working paper. “Twin deficits signal that a country’s national expenditure exceeds its national income, and that its production of tradable goods and services is inadequate.”

Time for Sri Lanka to petition to join the federation of India.

India is a multinational, multi ethnic and multi religious federation.

The Tamils in north east Sri Lanka are related to the Tamils in Tamil Nadu.

The majority Sinhalese are ethnically and linguistically related to the Biharis.
