Trump slams Esper as ‘lightweight’ in response to 60 Minutes interview

Former President Trump called his former defense secretary a “lightweight” and a “RINO” in response to a “60 Minutes” interview that covered a series of shocking claims about the former commander-in-chief.

Former Pentagon Mark Esper is releasing a book about his time in the Trump administration this week, and in early excerpts accuses the former president of wanting to shoot racial justice protestors in the legs and fire missiles into Mexico to crush cartels.

In response to CBS’ questions about the interview, Trump disputed those allegations and others, accusing Esper of being a failure as defense secretary.

“Mark Esper was weak and totally ineffective and because of it, I had to run the military,” said the statement from Trump to 60 Minutes.

“Mark Esper was a stiff who was desperate not to lose his job. He would do anything I wanted, that’s why I called him “Yesper.” He was a lightweight and figurehead, and I realized it very early on.”

In his statement, Trump also refuted claims that Esper had blocked consideration of using the Insurrection Act, which could have deployed active-duty troops to deal with civil unrest.

“This is Fake News,” Trump said of those reports. “The fact is I didn’t need to invoke the act and never did.”

[So what you’re saying is, he allowed himself to be made a fool over and over again by the people HE selected!]

McConnell had a veto over these people. So there’s that. I’m not an unqualified fan of his judgment, but he is not a king. Reagan had a coterie of people he had known for much of his life that he brought with him from the CA statehouse. Trump had his son-in-law and daughter. It’s not even a question of judgment - he did not know most of these people from Adam, and he had few people he could trust who knew them.

In real life, swamp dwellers act and look like normal human beings. When they stab you in the back, you have no idea who did it. And without hostile tell-all books, you never know.

And the worst part? Once appointed, they are hard to fire. The next nominee has to go through the blanket party known as Senate confirmation. That is why so many positions remained unfilled. McConnell had a veto. Only swamp dwellers were acceptable.

I may be wrong, but I think that’s the part he didn’t appreciate enough. He thought he could hire and fire at will like he did with his corporation.

It would be interesting to ask him about his appointees, and what lessons he learned from that experience.

He’s 75 years old and while his mind is fine, his personnel judgement is not likely to improve.

How about the judgment of the Republican party? Or you for example.

(I have no problems with the use of justofied force. Firing into the lower extremeties of a riotous mob committing acts of rape , pillage and arson is justified. No problemo.

Thats not p3eaceful protest and is NOT protected speech.

I agree. That was President Tumps only weakness, he kept eavesdroppers, cowans and usurpers in some key positions.

I also would like to know why. It created problems for him whichi he generally overcame. His administration was indeed glorious because of its acomplishments in the face of continuous obstacles, so much so that the left are still whining about Trump and have failed to be able to run the country in their abject, foolish anti Trumpness. On the left President Trump is COunt Dracula worthy of exporcism.

I hope and pray the President runs and wins once again. It would right the natiopn and establish a stable platform for a DeSantis or a Pompeo.

True JimRob, but I think the much maligned, deservedly so, McConnell deserves as much credit for SCOTUS as Pres Trump.

Sooner or later that will be necessary.

How predictable. If you want to sell a book these days you gotta have some bombshell claim. Doesn't matter if it's true or not.

I haven't seen one claim so far that hasn't been attributed to Esper and Milley in one of the other dozen or so 'tell all' books that have come out recently. Definitely old news.

I would support that before blowing up another wedding in Somalia or Yemen.

I don’t know why those cartel labs are not getting blown up as soon as they are built.

When my wife was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, there was a rush of well wishers. Then the crowds disappeared. I was surprised at the people who were “with us” throughout the whole thing. People who I expected to lend moral support…crickets. And that included the clergy and “we will pray for you” friends.

The person who showed up every week…her hairdresser. She was an angel from God throughout the whole thing. I never would have guessed that.
