St. Clair County's library system is asking voters to OK a higher tax in August. Here's why.

Danielle Reid joked that her family rolled into the local library branch with suitcases to fit all the books they intended to check out.

The Fort Gratiot resident said they take advantage of the St. Clair County Library System twice a week, and on Friday morning, she, twin sons Titus and Abe, 5, and daughter Selah, 8, were among several families at the Port Huron branch for story time — and the hive of crafts and activity that followed.

“I’m homeschooling them this year, so we’ve been able to take advantage of a lot of resources,” Reid said. “But we’ve been coming here for story time since (Selah) was about 6 months old.”

Reid said they also frequently work with librarians to access things they don’t find on the shelves and they participate in demonstrations about baby chicks with egg incubators. Last month they attended the library’s massive Easter egg hunt at Lincoln Park.

It’s these types of programming and resources the library system finances with a countywide millage.

The library system's 0.7-mill tax expired in 2021. In August, voters will be asked to pay an increased rate of 1.2-mill to support library operations.

I will never vote for a tax increase.

And property taxes are total crap, means you are renting more than owning.

Libraries are IMHO another GVT office that it's time to close, they internet is making them obsolete.

There was no book circulation at the Bodleian Library. They knew the Oxford dons would never return them.

Other than delivering porn to kids, is there ANY purpose for libraries these days?

Hard copy non fiction books may be more important than ever. Governments, in collusion with big tech oligarchs, can disappear or change any material on the Internet anytime they want. An example is the definition of the word vaccine.

We’ll, our local library is an excellent place for the homeless to come bathe in the sinks and shoot up in sci-if section.

I disagree.

HOWEVER, while I think Taxation is THEFT and Inflation is THEFT, I’ve never felt bad that tax dollars went to Libraries, EMTs, Cops and Firefighters.

Maybe roads. I’ll pay for BASIC roadways.

I think Libraries were the most wonderful, philanthropic invention, ever.

But, that’s about it. The rest is THEFT. And that includes Socialist Indoctrination Stations, aka, ‘Schools.’ Let private industry and churches handle that. We’d be SO much better off these days if we’d stuck with that instead of letting the Socialists infiltrate our schools.

Think books. All the other stuff is collateral. So how much does it cost the taxpayer for me to check one out? Periodical, internet use don’t count. It’s like Amtrak tickets subsidized. Plane tickets are cheaper.
