Passenger opens emergency exit of moving plane, walks onto wing at Chicago airport

CHICAGO (WGN) — A man is in custody after opening a plane’s emergency exit and walking onto the wing of the moving aircraft at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on United Airlines flight 2478, which had just arrived at O’Hare from San Diego. The aircraft was in the process of taxiing to the airport’s gate.

Remember when a Southwest flight overran the Burbank airport and crashed into a fence? Some people just got off and walked to their cars. Any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

The circumstance where you would NEED to use an emergency exit, would be when the plane was damaged.

You don't want to be unable to open the emergency exit in an emergency, because the control line from the cockpit isn't working.

That may be it. There are sometimes delays of an hour or more getting a gate at O’Hare after the plane has landed... it can drive you nuts if you are a smoker.

Listen! This question is really important. Was he wearing a mask when he went for walk? CDC requires all wing walkers to be masked and Fauci said wing walkers are super spreaders.

That would make the emergency exists quite useless if there was an incident where the pilots died or were unconscious, so that’s not feasible.

Burbank Airport, in the good old days, was a pure delight. I lived about 4 minutes away from the airport, and you could drop somebody off, have them check their bags and be on the plane in a grand total of 20 minutes, tops.
