In a breathless puff piece, Variety celebrated tennis star Venus Williams' new crusade for “equal pay” with male tennis players. But her sudden concern for equal pay seems to clash with events even she was involved in.
Williams claims she realized she would not be paid the same as men when she was 16.
“Getting there and realizing, ‘Wow, I’m not being paid equally,’ was just definitely a slap in the face to a 16-year-old. … It hit me hard.”
But both Venus and her sister Serena have already been involved in a game that shows the disparity between the level women play and the caliber of play men can reach. In 1998, the two sisters played an exhibition game with male tennis player Karsten Braasch.
The male player was already past his prime at 31 years of age and was ranked World No. 203 male player. But when the Williams sisters brashly claimed that they could beat any male player ranked in the top 200 players, Braasch stepped up and played the girls. And he wallopped them.
Braasch first beat Serena 6-1 in a single-set, winner-takes-all game. And when it was time for Venus to face him, Braasch trounced her 6-2. It turned out that, even as a lowly 203 ranked player, he was just faster and could hit harder than the girls. As good as the girls were, they couldn’t even beat a man who was never exactly a contender.
Both Venus and Serena should have learned the lesson that men and women simply don’t play the same game.

Venus Williams and her new truth might seem to be a different “truth” than she experienced in 1998. But it is also different than the one her own sister Serena was offering fans back in August of 2013 when she appeared on the David Letterman Show and admitted that even as a top world women’s tennis player, she could not beat men’s tennis star, Andy Murray.
Serena Williams told Letterman that she heard tennis star Andy Murray “joking” about having a match against Williams. But Williams was not a big fan of the idea.
“Andy, seriously. Like, are you kidding me?” she said about the idea. “For me, men’s tennis and women’s tennis are completely almost two separate sports.”
“So, if I were to play Andy Murray, I would lose, 6-0, 6-0, in 5 to 6 minutes, maybe 10 minutes,” Williams said.
“No, it’s true,” she added when Letterman tried to protest, “it’s a completely different sport. Men are a lot faster, and they serve harder and hit harder, it’s just a different game, and I only want to play girls, I don’t want to be embarrassed… So, Andy, I’m not going to let you kill me.”
Women tennis players don’t deserve the same pay.
They’re inferior to males, and they play best of 3, not best of 5.
Its not worth the same as mens tennis.
They are not equal money makers.
They dont deserve equal pay.
Do people buy tickets see her play?
That should drive her compensation.
But a female tennis player is much more marketable than a male tennis player. Look at how many brands Serena has represented in commercials lately. I think she’s doing alright.
We live in a time of outrageous behavior. On the streets,
in the market place, in every aspect of our society, if a
hair brained idea comes into someone’s head, they shout
it out and the world listens.
There is no rational thought. It’s just insanity on parade.
Pro sports are entertainment
More eyes = higher pay
Far fewer people view women’s sports.
Correct.
Venus - $95 million
Serena - $210 million
Even Anna Kournikova, who never won a major is worth $50 million.
If she has the same viewership as male players, yes she should be paid the same. If fewer people watch, no. It’s the opposite way in figure skating and gymnastics, the women get more viewers. That’s just how it is.
for those of you that have Sjogrens...so does Venus Williams.
If you suspect you might have it but have tested negative for it - Quest has an Early Sjogrens test.
Revenue is what matters. Not if women are as good.
Yes, she is.
I agree with her IF women agree to playing the full five sets, just as the men. My bet says that they are NOT willing to play for five sets so that I say, they can go do it to themselves.
Seem like the same argument the women’s national soccer team raises. The problem is that many women’s sports and just not as competitive and thus not as exciting to watch.
She needs to take a look at the attendance at WNBA games vs. Men’s then consider why sponsors pay the money prizes they do. Sounds more like her sister though.
(There is no rational thought. It’s just insanity on parade.)
It’s what Satan needs to bring in his anti-messiah as “savior”.
And it’s gonna work too.
For the first 3 and 1/2 years of the 7-year peace deal
Then shall be great tribulation such as there never was
Matthew 24:15-28
New King James Version
The Great Tribulation(A)
15 (B)“Therefore when you see the (C)‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (D)(whoever reads, let him understand), 16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But (E)woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For (F)then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; (G)but for the [a]elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
23 (H)“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24 For (I)false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, (J)if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand.
26 “Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. 27 (K)For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 (L)For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together.
