'Are you going to cave?' GOP primaries pit 'fighters' against 'governing wing' (WV primary next Tuesday)

And redistricting has only turned up the temperature of the fight, creating new red-leaning open seats and forcing ideologically divergent members into brawls for survival. Up next week is West Virginia’s primary — where GOP Rep. David McKinley, who likes to tout that he is ranked the 10th-most bipartisan member of Congress, will face off against GOP Rep. Alex Mooney, a Trump-endorsed member of the famously obstinate House Freedom Caucus.

McKinley is one of 13 House Republicans to join Democrats in passing an infrastructure bill, which he touts as bringing desperately needed funds to the state’s crumbling roads and bridges. Now, McKinley has tried to turn his race into a referendum on whether the Republican base has any appetite for his brand of compromise — or if they want their elected officials to oppose President Joe Biden at all costs.

“Maybe I’m just Don Quixote,” McKinley said last month while campaigning in his northern West Virginia district. “Maybe I’m chasing a windmill. But I believe in my heart that America wants us to work together.”

Groups aligned with each side are already waging proxy battles in under-the-radar Republican primaries — where both factions are sounding the alarm on what could happen if their opponents prevail.

“It’s becoming an emblem of: If you get the majority back as Republicans — are you going to cave?” said David McIntosh, the president of the anti-tax Club for Growth, which is backing Mooney and other hardliners. “Or are you going to fight and block Biden’s bad agenda?”

McKinley is supported by the Republican Main Street Partnership, an organization whose mission is to deliver a “governing majority,” and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce — two groups that also backed state Sen. Theresa Gavarone in the Ohio primary where Majewski prevailed.

” the Republican Main Street Partnership, an organization whose mission is to deliver a “governing majority,””

Should read “...deliver a liberal-RINO governing majority”. Otherwise there’s no reason NOT to support the good candidate — Mooney — over the spineless quisling (McKinley) since whichever Republican wins the primary is guaranteed to win in November also.

Unless (only if Mooney wins, of course) some false accusations of something are fabricated by the “liberal-RINO governing majority” in order to sabotage him in order that the liberal Democrat win instead of the conservative Republican.

Don’t discount the amount and severity of dirty tricks that the Uniparty is going to try between now and November — and beyond.

One of our (OK) RINOs (Inhofe) is retiring and there are a couple of good guys (Mullin and Dahm) running for his seat. He's an ancient, wrinkled old (87 years old) fossil who should have been removed long ago.

Lankford is another RINO for OK and has been a uniparty pimp all along. And every time he's up for re-election he starts barking about conservative causes. In fact, he congratulated pedo joe even before all the ballots had been counted. But he's gotten so much criticism, he had Ted Cruz campaign for him.

I lost a lot of respect for Cruz for that stunt. Lankford is the worst of the worst. We need to primary him out.

Even for a politician, many of whom function at the bottom of the wisdom pool, it defies logic to think -- to know -- that wanting to "work together" with people whose opening negotiating position is that you (and our America Republic and our Constitution) must be destroyed is not a "good idea". Such a person -- such a feckless politician -- must never be elected into a position of power and influence. Never.

I agree. lankford has to go.
I will take Dahm over the arrogant plumber any day.
mullin does not work for us. He pays enough in taxes , he pays his own congressional salary. He does this as a service. His own words.

It seems that Cruz is trying to dress as a member of the GOPe elite, but he simply hasn’t the guts.

Well your primary is on June 28. Hopefully Lankford’s opponent wins.

Markwayne Mullin, defending the racist monkey D.C. cop who assassinated the unarmed Ashley Babbitt:

“He was doing his job,” Mullin said. “He got put in a situation where he had to do his job because there were (House) members still in the balcony. And if you’re going to present your weapon ... and give commands and they still don’t listen and they still approach, you don’t have a choice. Either you have to at that point discharge your weapon in ... self-defense or that weapon is going to be taken away from you, it’s going to be used on you and put all of our lives in danger, too.”

It’s because of this sort of people that things never move to the right when Republicans are in the majority.

McKinley started out 11 years ago as a good Tea Party guy. However as it always seems to happen at the 10-year point (12 years in the Senate) the Siren song of the Beltway pulls them in. Many conservative incumbents don’t realize it’s happening and\or they rationalize it away.

It’s a shame, McKinley did it right. Successful private industry career before politics. The Cthulhu call of the DC establishment is too strong after a decade or so of listening to it.

I’ll be voting in the WV primary for Mooney. I do have misgivings about him. He’s clearly a professional politician though a conservative one. He moved here from Maryland in order to have a political career. Something he couldn’t do as a conservative in Maryland. I prefer not to vote for professional politicians not matter what their views. In this case I have to make an exception. McKinley voting for the Biden budget is crossing the line. McKinley can publicly rationalize all he wants about it. He shouldn’t have done it!

I think Mooney will lose. McKinley will paint Mooney as a carpetbagger. It will come down to, will a Trump endorsement (Mooney) trump “Native son” (McKinley - such things matter a great deal in WV and Appalachia!). We shall see!

McKinley sounds like a complete loser. In H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds (book, movie or radio version), he'd be one of those guys who walks up to the Martian to reason with it and gets immediately incinerated by the Martian death ray.

I think Mooney will win by 10 points.
Mooney and McKinley were on the radio today in a face off and Mooney torched his ass on his Biden vote. Trump will carry him over the finish line with room to spare. IMHO.
