Adults over 50 now qualify for Medi-Cal in California regardless of immigration status

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday announced that, beginning May 1, the state’s low-income health insurance would extend full coverage to all qualifying people who are 50 or older, regardless of immigration status.

The Medi-Cal expansion is expected to provide full coverage to more than 185,000 Californians, according to Newsom’s office.

The May 1 expansion is expected to cost the state $1.3 billion a year.

The May 1 expansion includes all people 50 years of age or older who are eligible for Medi-Cal whose immigration status is unsatisfactory. It also includes people 50 or older currently enrolled in restricted-scope Medi-Cal.

“These Californians now have a place where they can coordinate all of their medical, dental, mental, and substance use disorder needs, and a primary care physician to better manage their health conditions,” said Jacey Cooper, State Medicaid Director, in a statement. “Everyone benefits from ensuring access for all Californians, and many of us know someone who depends on Medi-Cal for vital health coverage.”

Good, I’ll spread the word here in Mexico, and let everyone know you’re kindness is seen. GREAT for California. Many in Mexico are tired of working and would prefer to live on the streets and be fed by the government.

I think California has a huge budget surplus right now. I don’t live there, but it’s their money.

But of course. What better political statement for a sanctuary state to make, than to decide that immigration status or citizenship status doesn’t matter.

California does have a surplus of about $40 billion at present.

So of course, there is the need for politicians to make that surplus dissolve.

Muchas Gracias California taxpayers for demanding the right to be able to pay the doctor bills for every freeloader on the planet.

Could the California legislators be any stupider? They will be overrun & overspent. Any law abiding taxpayers who can and the businesses who support them will flee.

Why does CA have that surplus? It’s COVID money. All you fine people throughout the US are paying for all this goodness happening in this fine state. Thank you US taxpayers!

Is the money exclusively out of Californians’ pockets? I thought in most states, the fed pays half?

Taxpayers from other states foot a big percentage of that bill.

Has Ca replaced tourism with state paid medical tourism?

Is there any reason that a person can not fly/ drive/ walk to Ca, demand “free” medical attention. And then simply have them self deported to their orig country at state expense?

I would expect that cancer and other super expensive treatments and surgeries will sky rocket in Ca.

Why would a country NOT simply send their over 50s to Ca for treatment instead of dealing with it themselves?

i think it is based on income. If I had some expensive treatment and qualified I would consider looking for a cheap town in California...if there is one.
