The Subway fast-food chain has been struggling — even before the coronavirus — but many franchise owners also felt that hiring U.S. soccer star and national anthem protester Megan Rapinoe as a national spokesperson was no help at all.
According the New York Post, Subway lost 1,043 outlets in 2021.
The loss only added to the 1,609 lost in 2020 at the height of the coronavirus hysteria and the 999 lost in 2019. The number of closed restaurants means that Subway’s national footprint has contracted 22 percent overall since 2016.
In contrast, McDonald’s only contracted 3.4 percent over the last few years.
So, what is going wrong? Well, some franchise owners feel that hiring Megan Rapinoe was just one of the contributing factors to Subway’s mounting woes.
Coming on the heels of the 2015 debacle when national spokesman Jared Fogle was convicted and went to jail on child porn charges, and just as Subway was losing a record number of locations, the company’s chiefs in its Milford, Connecticut, headquarters hired Rapinoe hot off the U.S. National Women’s Soccer Team’s loss of the gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
But franchise owners were extremely unhappy with the decision.
Some franchise owners were furious that Subway chose such a radical and controversial political figure to push their product.
“Spending our money to make a political statement is completely and totally out of bounds,” one Arizona franchisee complained .
“The ad should be pulled and done with,” another franchisee wrote of Rapinoe’s national commercial. “It gets tiring apologizing.”
Subway never officially responded to the complaints about the Rapinoe spots, but they didn’t play very long. Regardless, the company’s foothold in the U.S. market continues to slip, and hiring people who are perceived as anti-American like Rapinoe is not helping reverse the decline.

Screw Subway. Lots of other places want my money and don’t feel a need to insult me for loving my country.
Wow. I never thought they could take a step down from jared, but they figured out a way.
get woke go broke
What you said.
I was given a $15 gift card to Subway about a year ago. It’s free food and there’s no reason to not use it, but I still haven’t gotten around to it.
Even if I had no idea who she was, the ads were VERY off-putting.
Here’s some poor guy getting a chicken sandwich in a drive-through, and this really obnoxious woman KICKS a soccer ball at it, knocking it out of his hand. I don’t care if they got Pele to do it, I just found that to be VERY off-putting.
That is a lot of locations to close in two years. They may need to bring back Happy Gilmore to sell their products.
So the favorite restaurant of Jussie Smollett hired Jared With Pink Hair to appeal to what market demographic, exactly? Angry dyke America haters?
Not only are they anti-America, they are pro-Ukraine. Interesting how those things go together so often. 🤔

Drop national spokes-folks and concentrate on making the best sandwiches with superlative customer service.
I wish these articles would identify who (specifically) was responsible for the advertisements. Do some reporting. Name names. Who hired the advertisement firm? Who created the advertisements? Give them the publicity that they so richly deserve.
In my neck of the woods the subways are inside gas stations and are the only fast food for miles. The customers are a captive audience of sorts.
Jimmy’s John
I think after Amazon and other corporations dropped Black Lives Matter over their directors’ in-your-face corruption, corporate zeal to identify with “causes” has been dampened considerably.
Look for more and more companies announcing, “We don’t get involved in politics. Period.”
Wawa outside Philly is great.
Gas station super store.
Egads!! The spike proteins attacked her hair. She should have never have got the clot shot.
...and now they use Simone Biles, who tarnished her reputation as a national hero during the Olympics.
The IOC was going to get her on drugs, so she dropped from he next event.
NOT my kind of hero.
Why would a store that makes sandwiches have a Ukraine v Russia political position?
“Republicans buy shoes too.”
