“I caught up recently with several Trump-opposing Republican strategists and former associates of the president who argued this restraint should end,” Leibovich writes. “The best way for a Republican to depose Trump in 2024, they said, will be to call Trump a loser, as early and as brutally as possible—and keep pointing out the absurdity of treating a one-term, twice-impeached, 75-year-old former president like a kingmaker and heir apparent. In other words, don’t worry about hurting Special Boy’s feelings.”

What’s truly disturbing about the notion that this is a good way to attack Trump is that it suggests that a sizable portion of the Republican establishment is still convinced that the genie can be stuffed back in his bottle—that voters will finally, after seven years, realize that the guy they love is a huckster and go back to voting for Republican candidates who’ll do normal Republican stuff without all the intemperate bluster and contempt for norms. Voters know who Donald Trump is! His voters like him just fine. Candidates who might have been those “normal” Republicans a few years ago—Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Ohio Senate candidate J.D. Vance come to mind—have drunk the Kool-Aid and recast themselves as Trumps-in-waiting. There isn’t some new generation of sober-minded, constitutional conservatives waiting in the wings. That ship has sailed.

At least ONE guy realizes that all the attacks for seven years straight haven't worked. We are NOT going back to the pantywaist republican types.
Mega-Dittos!
Shepard is clearly an extremly partisan hack comedian who thinks BiXiden is, in general, doing a great job.
Funny stuff.
After Bush 1 & Bush 2 many Rank and file Republican voters have had it with the establishment. Yeah Trump made some horrendous personnel decisions and he could be a jerk.....much of the time but to quote Abraham Lincoln “I can’t spare this man, he fights”.
Trump didn’t lose.
2,000 Mules.
Was he a jerk or are you repeating Groupthink? Tough negotiation is how things get done.
Media were the jerks
BTW, somebody send complementary tickets to the Supreme Court justices.
Howzat? You did? They said they weren't interested?
You mean they won't even view the evidence???
BTW, somebody send complementary tickets to the Supreme Court justices.Did anyone send tickets to Fox News Corp.? Or are they featured in the film?
We are NOT going back to the pantywaist republican types.

Maybe not for President, but I bet Amnesty Senators Hoeven and Rubio are re-elected.
As well as lots of other Bush League Republicans.
Trump can be a jerk but most great leaders and personalities share the same trait. Being a jerk sometimes does note negate his ability to do a great job in what really counts.
Nope, they haven't. But they have helped identify the enemy.
Media were jerks but President Trump did say and tweet some things that were not constructive, often distracted from positive news and were widely viewed as personal attacks instead of well thought out criticism. We all like the guy here and will vote for him but us alone can’t get him elected. You have to win over those in the middle and often he did or said things that did not help to accomplish that. That is why he is not President today.

The GOP needs to be looking for a well rounded mid 60s person
to be the candidate. That person would eligible to serve to terms.
Trump has only one term left. But he could be a great supporter
to another if he so chose. I’m not sure that would be in Trump’s
wheelhouse.
Trump gets a lot of play on FR but I’m not sure what his stature is
among the rest of the GOP. I know his support would be a great
asset to any candidate.
It’s the “middle” that needs to get their act together, not Trump.
Well if you cannot convince the “middle” to vote for you then you never are going to be in a position to make anything change. That is just the way it is.
Agreed. He has great ideas and knows it but his big shortfall was not recognizing and learning early on that being President of the US requires far different methods than being President of Trump Inc.
