My understanding is that unlike our military, Russians don’t have a strong NCO corps. They don’t trust their soldiers.
I have a bias since I was an E-5, active duty, but I think there are too many officers in the military anyway.
I now have more education most officers I worked for and see no reason why they were better at military stuff than I was as an E5 if I had received the same training.

Well, a matter of opinion and country, frankly. I’d dare say that there are a LOT of Generals this country could stand to lose and come out the better for it. :0)

I am reminded of the last push by the Russians into Berlin. Stalin purposely pitted two of his own generals against each other to finish the job and take Berlin. Stalin didn’t give a crap how many soldiers it took - or Generals.

Washington was placed at the head of another Continental army in the mid-1790’s by then-POTUS Adams, with a totally hyperactive and status-seeking Hamilton positioned as Washington’s second in command. In the field, though, and during any anticipated combat operations, Hamilton was expected to lead, with Washington held back from the front lines in accordance the modern practice you’ve described.

“Those Russian generals are the bravest of the brave, by pressing from the front lines.”

If even true, it’s probably because it’s the only way they know what’s actually going on, instead of having status reports filtered through layers of butt-kissing yes men.

No, It's not. Additionally, russian brigades and battalions are often commanded by colonels and majors respectively.

......the first targets are command and control.... That's why the newer trend to highly distributed command and control regimes. Nevertheless, my POINT was that sometimes generalship command isn't effective - some may even say counter productive. For this country for this administration and the military hierarchy it has promoted this last decade+, I say the latter...
