KYIV, April 21 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin claimed victory in the biggest battle of the Ukraine war on Thursday, declaring the port of Mariupol "liberated" after nearly two months of siege, despite hundreds of defenders still holding out inside a giant steel works.
In a televised meeting with his defence minister inside the Kremlin, Putin said there was no need for a final confrontation with the last defenders who were boxed in after surviving nearly two months of Russia's siege.
"I consider the proposed storming of the industrial zone unnecessary," he told Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in a televised meeting at the Kremlin. "I order you to cancel it."
"There's no need to climb into these catacombs and crawl underground through these industrial facilities," he said. "Block off this industrial area so that not even a fly can get through."
Shoigu estimated 2,000 Ukrainian fighters remained inside the plant. Putin called on them to lay down their weapons and surrender, saying Russia would treat them with respect.

I have nothing against the Russian people. They have even less say over what their leader does than we do about what ours are doing.
I am sure there are plenty of despicable men on both sides of the conflict but most of their forces are conscripts who have little clue where they are or what they are doing. Their mothers have even less of a clue.
This has been a disgusting conflict and Putin will NEVER recover from the damage he has done to his nation, himself, and the Russian brand. His oligarch friends are in jeopardy as well because the next “populist” in Russia is probably going to seize any assets they have left within the nation “for the people”.
That is the history of Russia. Today’s strong man is tomorrows pariah and his inner circle goes with him.
I don’t have anything but affection for the Russian people - but this invasion is absolutely wrong. I feel bad for the hapless conscripts and for the innocent Ukrainian civilians - but like you said, the Russian brand is severely damaged by this.
He’s claimed victory many times before. Though I think they will “take” Mariupol, they won’t “hold” Mariupol long term any more than they held the others.

Feel free to not believe it, but I will choose to believe things when both the Russian Government and the Western Media are saying the same thing - which is that Mariupol is now liberated.
