Black Entrepreneur Used His Entire Life Savings to Launch a Scheduling App. Now It’s Worth Over $3 Billion Less Than 10 Years Later. [Apparently, he studied computer programming, and not critical race theory.]

When Nigeria-born, Atlanta-based Tope Awotona launched the meeting scheduling service Calendly in 2013 he believed in his idea so much that he used his entire life savings to launch the startup.

The idea grew out of Awotona’s own challenges keeping track of his schedule. A lot of other people needed appointment scheduling services — today, the platform has 10 million users. In 2021, the scheduling app had achieved a $3 billion valuation.

The company was founded in Atlanta and has been profitable since 2016, according to Forbes. Among Calendly’s corporate clients are Lyft, Ancestry.com, Indiana University, and La-Z-Boy. Revenue for 2021 exceeded $100 million.

Last year, Calendly also raised $350 million in funding from OpenView Venture Partners and Iconiq Capital. Awotona’s majority stake is worth at least $1.4 billion, calculates Forbes.

I had to reread it a few times, too. The gist —> In a decade, he became a successful billionaire.

Nigerian Americans are the most financially successful minority group. They are all Doctors and small business owners

My boss is Nigerian. He was born in Nigeria but parents moved to US when he was really young so he really only knows the United States. Amazing guy, very generous, and treats his people well.

Same here. My daughter is engaged to a Nigerian with three engineering degrees, one from Stanford. He got admitted to college in the US at age 16. He is one smart guy and nice as can be.

The key word there is "parents". Kids from two parent families tend to do better then parents from single parent families regardless of any other factor.

That does not mean children of single parents can not do well, it is just harder and not as likely.

You want successful children?

Get married, stay married.

One was a Captain who was assigned to the Air Force Research Lab in Albuquerque. Very smart, looked like he ironed his uniform after he put it on, and as the program we we were working on was on was an armored vehicle, he was amazingly strong. Had a very subtle sense of humor too.

Native born blacks (many of them, if not most) see what you're seeing, and complain how the black Africans, by being successful in America, are putting a damper on the black victimhood scam they've put on America. If they are successful, America is going to ask "why are you not successful?". Can't have that now, gotta keep the scam going.

Mind you, the native born black doesn't say this out loud, but it's an open secret in many black communities -- foreign blacks being called "coconuts", or some other derogatory name, just because they are successful.

Not only Africans, but blacks from other countries who are successful are rife for abuse from native-born blacks, unless they also buy into the "whoa is me" scam.

The recent African immigrants to this country are pretty generally good folks, great attitudes, grateful to be here, hard working, good neighbors, well spoken and take care of their houses and kids. AA’s resent them for all that.
