Two British soldiers fighting with the Ukrainian army have appeared on Russian state television after being captured in the besieged port city of Mariupol in southern Ukraine.
Several propaganda clips aired on Rossia 1 and RT channels on Sunday and Monday, picturing U.K. citizens Shaun Pinner, 48, and Aiden Aslin, 28. They fought in Mariupol as part of Ukraine's 36th Marine Brigade.
On Sunday, Pinner, who appeared to be tired and bruised, spoke to Russian TV war reporter Andrey Rudenko and gave some details about the battle of Mariupol.
"I was fighting in Mariupol for five to six weeks and now I'm in Donetsk People's Republic," Pinner said in English, referring to the eastern region where Russia and pro-Russian separatists have been fighting Ukraine for years. It is not clear how exactly he was captured or when the video was filmed.
Rudenko can be heard telling Pinner in Russia that his unit "had no chance" in Mariupol.
"The servicemen of the 36th brigade say their command specially sent them to be killed in order to make heroes out of them later," Rudenko says, without evidence. "You didn't have a single chance to reach this settlement Zachatovka, since Russian and DPR [Donetsk People's Republic] troops were everywhere."

Got it.
More propaganda from MSN.
Hmmm. I thought the Russians were executing everyone. Maybe the Daily Mail isn’t a reliable information source after all.
Okay, “British soldiers,” as in active-duty Royal Army?
Those aren’t ‘UK solders’ - those are mercenaries who happen to come from the UK 🤪
Big difference
We can't out the CIA/MI6 agitprop embeds at MSN/SeeBS.
Aiden Aslin - British Man Fighting for Ukraine, Captured in Donbass, Mariupol
Those aren’t ‘UK solders’ - those are mercenaries
Hessians could be paid to fight for either side.
Incidentally, Hessians were auxiliaries, not mercenaries. Mercenaries fight of their own accord, whereas the Hessians and troops from other german principalities were hired out by their governments without input from the troops. In some instances, the rulers of the petty states received more money for a soldier killed than a soldier who returned alive.
“Mercenaries are not entitled to the status of combatant, prisoner of war (API Article 47), or any of the categories of protected persons provided for by the Geneva Conventions, unless they are wounded or sick, although they must always benefit from humane treatment.”
You are correct about auxiliaries.
I remembered Hessians from 5th grade US History class, way last century.
Wars are nasty business, to say the least.
Regardless of whether one is a "mercenary" or an "auxiliary," the reality is that these people are not protected by any of the international conventions of warfare.
Interestingly, it would have been considered unseemly and/or unethical under the standards of warfare at the time for Gen. George Washington to launch a surprise attack at dawn against British troops at Trenton during the American Revolution. Those rules and standards went out the window because the targets were Hessians, not British.
If, so, they have no rights.
How did this UK Mercenary survive the Russian nerve gas attack that killed millions in Mariupol?!
Stiff upper lip...................
.
They knew the risks. Like the old days in Rhodesia.

That’s what I thought when one was 48 years old!
