A Kentucky restaurant manager has recalled the hateful treatment he received from customers after he flew a Ukrainian flag in solidarity with the country, amid the war.
Ben Ashlock, who heads Colton's Steak House and Grill in Bardstown, Kentucky, told The Washington Post that he has a personal connection to Ukraine because he and his wife adopted their son from there three years ago. So when the war broke out, Ashlock said he wanted to show solidarity by flying a Ukrainian flag at the restaurant.
"You just let them know, even in little old Kentucky, we see you, and we're supporting you," he told The Post.
Ashlock didn't think any problems would arise from the gesture. But shortly after he flew the flag atop the building, Ashlock said he began to receive strong messages of hate from customers via the restaurant's phone, Facebook page, and Google reviews.
One customer said, "My family eats at Colton's steakhouse, but will not eat there again until the Ukrainian flag is replaced with our national Flag," via a direct message on the restaurant's Facebook page.
The Post also referenced reviews — some of which had been removed — shared by Ashlock via screenshots. One said: "Take that trash flag down! May Ukraine be leveled to the ground!"
Ashlock even said he received a 1-star review of Colton's on Google because of the flag. "Food tasted woke, management is a war monger," the review read.

Oh noes. Someone doesn’t agree with me.
Come on folks.
The guy might get more respect by just flying an ordinary Nazi flag, that’s at least honest...
Fly whatever flag you want outside your business, its your business! But...
If you're offended and upset you're not the prettiest girl in class, you are a lost soul anyways..
otoh, I prefer to do business with people who really are hated by the world and for good reason, they're humble Christians.
I just spent the weekend in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Those Ukie flags are everywhere. As are FJB flags.
Apparently republicans love them some globalists.
I expect Mr. Ashlock to shortly become a “former restaurant manager” since there is no indication the place is his to do with as he wishes. He was hired to manage the restaurant for an ownership group that will be most unhappy that their investment is the subject of a community and social media furor. If the poor online reviews result in reduced traffic through the door, the bottom line will be the final arbiter of the flag issue and the end of Ashlock’s job. I understand truck drivers are sorely needed so at least he’s got that.
Huh? I don't like Zelensky, but the Ukrainian people are not Nazis. They're victims (of Putin and Zelensky).
Same here in Los Angeles.
How dare customers not want WW3. Ungrateful bastards.
Restaurant manager flew a Ukrainian flag. Hateful messages followed.
...Ashlock and his wife of 19 years, Darrci, forged lifelong friendships in Ukraine while there to adopt their son. The 16-year-old is one of the couple's 13 children - eight biological and five adopted or in the process of being adopted.
Now I'm really curious...
People in the US who fly Ukraine flags are the most indoctrinated.
All of those heart-string details do not change a thing from what I posted @ https://freerepublic.com/focus/news/4055898/posts?page=7#7. The guy was hired to do a specific job, not to take a position on a particular controversy which might affect his ability to get customers in the door of the restaurant. Anything that leads to a loss of volume/sales = bottom line impact and that’s how the restaurant’s investors judge how the guy is managing their asset/investment.
This is what happens when a company fails to remember why they are in business. If he doesn’t want to serve those that do not agree with his political opinion, which will always be half the crowd no matter the opinion, then he’s an idiot for pushing away half the crowd.
My heartstrings weren’t tugged.
My meter was pegged.
And now I’m really curious about that family.
Here’s another occasion where I really hope I’m wrong about what I’m thinking...
Our radical, leftie neighbor put a Ukrainian flag up last week, actually she asked another neighbor to install it. That afternoon cars started rolling into the court, she was having an “indivisible” party. Soon they came out of her house and they all had Ukrainian flags draped around their bodies, facing her flag and attempting to sing what we think was the Ukrainian anthem.
Our other neighbor who is a retired thirty-five year marine, machine gunner, is furious, saying in the years she has lived there not once has she ever had an American flag.
It always helps to have some background info.
There is a fairly large Russian population in Louisville. Don’t ask me why, I don’t know.
Might they be behind this? Perhaps. The Louisville Left virtue signals like any other pack of Leftists.
We have people in our area who have adopted Uke. They adopt teens usually. In groups. And they are vocal in their support of Ukraine.
You are wrong. Ukraine adoptions ate a trendy Christian mission for the past 15 years.
