Russia 'moves heavy military equipment towards Finnish border'

Russian heavy weapons including missile systems have been seen moving towards the border with Finland, hours after Russia warned its northern neighbour against joining NATO.

An unconfirmed video uploaded last night appears to show two Russian coastal defence missile systems moving along a road on the Russian side of the border that leads to Helsinki.

The missile systems are thought to be the K-300P Bastion-P mobile coastal defence system, designed to take out surface ships up to and including aircraft carrier battle groups.

The Russian deployment comes as Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said she expects her government 'will end the discussion before midsummer' on whether to apply for NATO membership.

Recent opinions polls by a Finnish market research company put 84% of Finns as viewing Russia as a 'significant military threat', up by 25% on last year.

In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov euphemistically warned the move would 'not improve' the security situation in Europe, and Moscow lawmaker Vladimir Dzhabarov added more bluntly it would mean 'the destruction of the country'.

'We have repeatedly said that the alliance remains a tool geared towards confrontation and its further expansion will not bring stability to the European continent,' Peskov said.

I’d say an all out conventional war with Russia would last a few months at most until their entire military looks like the Highway of Death from Iraq war 1.

What’s better than losing a war on one front? Losing a war on two fronts.

Of course, after seeing the Russian response to Ukraine’s NATO talk, it takes industrial grade stupid to announce your future NATO membership. Make your announcement when the deal is done and Putin has to add a confrontation with NATO into his calculus, not beforehand so he can get his invasion in first and NATO has to make the hard choice.

I THINK the message Russia is trying to send is that joining the NATO alliance puts a country formally in opposition to Russia.

That they have aligned themselves with a hostile force.

Whether these countries care remains to be seen.

There is no chance Russia is going to tolerate a heavily-armed Finland in NATO. Nor should it.

The Finns have every right to arm themselves enough to defend themselves. Pretty basic, natural principle, similar to the Second Amendment in this country.

We wouldn't tolerate Mexico being heavily-armed and aligned with either Russia or China

Mexico doesn't heavily arm itself against the US because the US doesn't go around invading its neighbors.

Hush, Neocon

Don't fret. You won't have to run around in circles with your fingers in your ears for long. Soon Putin will give you your bullshit excuses for Finland and you guys can get to work.

“Russia can and will incinerate Finland with H-bimbos. What’s your plan after that?”

Do you believe Russia so weak that they will have to use their weapons of last resort? Seems you have precious little confidence in the prowess of the Russian military.

“NATO has now finally woken up to the fact that Trump’s demands were very wise.”

BS.

Most, especially Germany, are not meeting the minimum annual spend.

And it is STILL in US best interest to cut them loose.

There’s that and the last time the Russians tried to take Finland they fared worse than they are in the Ukraine, with whole battalions wiped out in avalanches.

You Neocons can keep Finland and the Ukraine. America is being invaded and that is my interest. But hell, why not grow a pair and volunteer?

The anti-ship missiles make some sense. From the area around St. Petersburg he can interdict the northern part of the Baltic Sea and its connection to the Gulf of Bothnia, without flying over the Baltic states (NATO). That would threaten aid (supplies) going to Finland by sea.

If you threaten their re-supply lines you may be able to get them to reconsider doing something you don’t want, but you may also push them to do the thing they are considering, but have not decided on quite yet.

But Finland is about 700 miles by 200 miles and is heavily forested. If you invade with a lot of mechanized units you will lose a lot of mechanized units in the forests. If you invade with a large infantry army you may lose a lot of infantry in the forests.

Putin is moving around like a bull in a china shop.

One week before the Russian invasion, Zelensky and his Defense Ministry publicly scolded Biden and the US for hyping that Russia was going to invade. I wonder why he did that?

Biden was inciting the invasion. He can't imagine why Ukraine wouldn't want that?

True. Russia (not just Putin, or the Soviets) has a terrible attitude problem. They have a huge chip on the shoulder and extreme short term thinking.

Yes, that's true. As befits the fact that your average Russian is, sad to say, invariably little more than a morose pagan alcoholic. Some decent (if melancholic) literature, a few generally bombastic composers, and a handful of ballet dancers does little to disguise the fact that, culturally, Russia is awash in backwards peasants who've long struggled to join the 20th century, much less the 21st.

The people here who hold up Putin, and "Mother Russia," as the last bastion of "white, Western, Christian values" are ridiculous clowns.
