Russia 'moves heavy military equipment towards Finnish border'

Russian heavy weapons including missile systems have been seen moving towards the border with Finland, hours after Russia warned its northern neighbour against joining NATO.

An unconfirmed video uploaded last night appears to show two Russian coastal defence missile systems moving along a road on the Russian side of the border that leads to Helsinki.

The missile systems are thought to be the K-300P Bastion-P mobile coastal defence system, designed to take out surface ships up to and including aircraft carrier battle groups.

The Russian deployment comes as Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said she expects her government 'will end the discussion before midsummer' on whether to apply for NATO membership.

Recent opinions polls by a Finnish market research company put 84% of Finns as viewing Russia as a 'significant military threat', up by 25% on last year.

In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov euphemistically warned the move would 'not improve' the security situation in Europe, and Moscow lawmaker Vladimir Dzhabarov added more bluntly it would mean 'the destruction of the country'.

'We have repeatedly said that the alliance remains a tool geared towards confrontation and its further expansion will not bring stability to the European continent,' Peskov said.

Perhaps the west should consider that since Kosovo, Iraq, etc others might not consider NATO the defensive body it once was.

Russia is already boarded by 3 NATO countries: Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The Russian narrative that this is all about an expanding NATO is a lie. They have used it as an excuse to go to war, but I don’t believe it is grounded in any truth.

> If they’re sending anti-ship systems, they’re either planning naval operations or are running out of short range ballistic missiles. <

Or maybe they’re just bluffing with whatever hardware happens to be available.

putin seems to be more unstable than north korean leaders at this point. He is going to force a world war apocalypse.. Or we could just surrender in advance to them like so many of our freeper friends seem to advise.

All well and fine, but it takes something Pootie has in short supply: an army to take and hold the ground.

I’m tired, tired, tired of this apples and oranges comparison. None of the United States’ neighbors are in fear or danger of invasion from the US. To the contrary, the United States is far friendlier to Mexico and Canada than their status’s might warrant.

Russia, on the other hand, has a long history of invading her neighbors. Every country bordering Russia in the west has experienced a repressive Russian occupation. The reason for NATO and the reason for new countries clamoring to join NATO is because of this fact. If Russia were as benign in her sphere as the US is in hers, none of these nations would be interested in joining NATO.

We wouldn’t?
Who said?

“We” tolerated a heavily armed Cuba, with a Soviet brigade no less.

When Texas becomes independent, it will likely need a military alliance with Mexico and China.

Maybe Russia can supply some weapons too

You know, to “protect democracy.”

There is no chance Russia is going to tolerate a heavily-armed Finland in NATO. Nor should it.

And here's the thing; the Neocons knows Putin is bluffing. (/s)

“poking the bear, see what it gets you.”

How did Finland “poke the bear” in 1939?

It didn’t, of course. But Russia poked Finland by making ludicrous demands upon Finland to surrender Finnish territory to Russia, for “security reasons.” Finland told Russia to pound sand, and Russia invaded.

My checklist

-Buy lots of gallon jugs of water.
-Fill cars with gas.
-Put the radio gear in the EMP boxes.
-Rotate the cases of canned chicken breast, oldest out front.
-Get the finest cuts of meat out of the freezers, use it or lose it.
-Charge all the LiFePO4 batteries.
etc, etc, etc
-Pray unceasingly.

Once again, Putin (like a long list of predecessors) is trying to bluff and scare others.

Problem is, it scares others into treaties with organizations like NATO - it’s like watching someone living in opposite world.

Plus, you have to have a credible threat in order to be ‘scary’ - Russia has been s**ting-the-bed on that aspect of the equation.

True. Russia (not just Putin, or the Soviets) has a terrible attitude problem. They have a huge chip on the shoulder and extreme short term thinking.

What they need is a few million copies of Dale Carnegie, “How to Win Friends and Influence People”
