President Biden on Tuesday is set to announce that the Environmental Protection Agency will allow E15 gasoline—gasoline that uses a 15% ethanol blend—to be sold in the United States this summer in an effort to expand Americans’ access to affordable fuel supply amid the surge in gas prices across the nation.
The EPA is set to issue a national, emergency waiver. Without the action, the White House said E15 cannot be used in most of the country from June 1 to September 15. The EPA is expected to take final action to issue the emergency waiver closer to June 1.
Ethanol in gasoline costs MORE than the slight per gallon price reduction caused by the ethanol increase. The two main reasons for this are:
1. The added ethanol reduces fuel economy
2. The true price increase is hidden from the consumer by government subsidies of the ethanol.
Consumers lose on both counts. Worse fuel economy simply means that you have to buy more gasoline. Giving away government money to hide inflation simply makes the inflation worse.
With all dire predictions about coming worldwide famines, burning ethanol derived from corn makes it even worse. To pile on, the people hurt the most by this are likely driving cars that are not even designed for 15% ethanol and are likely to incur added repair costs, as well.
Ethanol has roughly half the energy per gallon as gasoline. This energy is what moves the car. It takes more gallons to go the same distance. High ethanol concentrations can destroy seals and plastic parts in the engine. Not all cars have the generally more costly seals and parts to avoid this. Ethanol also absorbs water - gasoline does not. This water in the fuel can corrode metallic parts in the fuel system, as well. All cost more money in the long run.
FWIW....
Nascar has run on E15 for over a decade now.
Indycars have run on E85 since 2007.
Your President in action...

You don’t have E15 if you have black pump lines those three are 87,91,93 octane with 10% at most of ethanol the pump should have a EPA sticker on it showing this fuel.contains 10% or less in ethanol. Every legal E15 properly U88 pump in the whole USA will have a bright four inch by four inch dayglow Orange background with bold black lettering clearly showing E15 and the use only in 2001 or newer vehicles or flex fuel vehicles any station that doesn’t have those labels and a dedicated pump line is looking at $50000+ fines. It is nearly impossible to “accidentally” put E15 in a vehicle th person would have to ignore the big Orange label then the push button with E15 on it and then the blue pump line and blue handle. Diesel is green pump line and handle by law.
An old saying in these parts is: "if you feed corn to your cattle, your pigs and chickens eat for free".
More seriously, spent distiller's corn is fed as high protein livestock feed; distillation removes the starch, but not other nutrients.
> Makes me want to go buy 200lbs of beans and rice.
what are you waiting for?
btw that’s very roughly 100 days of calories for two people
check flour as well. a lot cheaper calories
Modern agriculture is not as simple as just making a decision one day to plant a different crop on your 3,000-acre farm or selling your existing ethanol corn crop to different customers for a different use. Interestingly, I suspect a big factor in the push for ethanol in gasoline is that it gave corn farmers a new market for their crops after corn had slowly been displaced by soybeans as the preferred feedstock for farm animals.
E10 will still have to be available for older engines made SORE engines neither is EPA approved for E15 or higher a state cannot take E10 away as they would be breaking federal law by forcing noncompliance of fuel usage. This is the exact reason E0 pumps exist at marinas and select fuelling locations inside a EPA air quality none attainment area there must be a fuel supply for older engines and SORE engines to have legal fuel to burn. That’s not to say it’s not priced at a point to discourage on road use in none attainment areas. E0 is fourty cents more per gallon than 87 and 20 cents more than 93 at the one place that has E0 in this area which happens to be on the hey leading to a lake. E10 is here to stay it will most likely be the only low ethanol blend in all areas soon with E0 being specialty fuel at limited pumps just for boats and chainsaws and the like.

And by extension, how many government edicts are they admitting are failures? EPA has to provide exception - means higher pollution now ok?
“This will destroy and or severely damage engines...This stinks!”
It sure will, Unless you tear it down and raise the compression ratio with different pistons you can’t run over 10%.
This will not increase the fuel supply, only more oil will. These people are incredibly stupid. Guess they are draining the SPR and this is Plan B
The Ag lobby has huge influence in Wash DC.
That’s why the libs put food stamps under the Agriculture Dept instead of “Health and Welfare” back in 74 and also federal subsidies to school lunches.
I remember when this was first getting popular a decade ago, had family members that are commercial fishermen on east coast talk about how crappy the ethanol mix fuel was. Said it ate away at the gaskets and seals on the engine. Also it seemed to separate and breakdown quickly when sitting in storage tanks. It would have water separate out of it so if you didnt use it quickly, you had to dump out the whole tank.
Also got gas one time for our Camry that boasted higher ethanol. Not 15% but it was more than normal. We would get 400+ miles a tank on hwy drives. For that ethanol mix, we did 250-280 miles. Definitely not worth the savings in the fuel when the mileage is that much less.
All part of the over all plan to bring the population into servatude to the elite government.
The headline should read “Biden plans to destroy gasoline engines to kickstart sales of electric vehicles”.
Most QuikTrip stores have the red handle pumps which is ethanol free. All I use.
It’s against the law to use E15 in small engines of course it voids the warranty. E15 is not replacing E10 it’s in addition too E0 and E10 and E85. Some places have blender pumps with yellow lines and handles that can make E20 to E85 at a custom.ratio that the user tells the pump to make. It still.stands that anything other than E10 used in a small off road engines is a federal crime virtually no one is prosecuted for it bit crime none the less. Most small engine makers now have changed from 100+ year old girl and rubber seals and floats to neoprene or nitrile elastomers those new engines can and do run just fine on E10 as has been pointed out by other people already one who like myself leaves fuel E10 in both cases for months in my chainsaw, and portable generator tanks with red fuel.stabilizer it.keeps for 6+ months
China has the right idea take waste gas use American technology to make.Ethanol from gas they were going to vent anyways.
The same technology can be used to take stalks, straw, wood scraps, MSW, sewage sludge pretty much anything with carbon in it that you can gassify and make second generation ethanol from it cheap too the.chicoms don’t do back unless it’s cheap.
