Black and Hispanic Americans are paying extra money to secure rental housing in the U.S. compared with Whites, according to Zillow.

In a report this week, the real estate data firm said that, regardless of race, Americans paid an average of $700 in security deposits when renting an apartment. Yet renters of color paid $750 while White renters paid $600. White renters typically paid $50 for a rental application fee while Black Americans paid $65; Hispanic applicants paid $80 and Asian Americans paid $10. People of color also typically must submit more rental applications in order to find a place to live as well as pay more in related fees than white renters, Zillow concluded.

Now, wait a minute. I think many blacks do spend more on rent. I do. They have terrible FICO scores.

Eh?

Only thing I can think of is that Asians tend not to rent unless they are students which is where, once you find out they are students and often the entire shot is paid for the year up front, you do not have very high fees because you have minimal risk.

I’d like to think any variation attributed to race is really more accurately because of location and that if done per location they’d find the prices the same. If not, then that would be news and warrant investigation.

had my property for sale and a couple of years ago, Zillow made nasty negative comments...

Compared my “$55,000” purchase price to my $385,000 asking price & claimed I was gouging a prospective buyer.

Apparently, they were not competent enough to realize the $55,000 was the land-—ONLY

NOT the house-—NOT the garage-—NOT the perimeter fencing & gates & cross fencing.

Not very impressed with Zillow....

Well… maybe POC have a greater tendency to trash the rental, not pay rent, disturb the peace, vacate with unpaid utility bills, etc. They may also not know how to shop around, negotiate, or appear to be a decent, appealing tenant. They may also have a greater tendency to be Section 8 where they don’t even pay the rent.

With a name like “Rogers,” we can make an educated guess your race. It’s right up there with Smith and Jones.

I’ve found that applying to the nicer apartment complexes these days requires paying for a criminal background check.

This is kind of a side story, but I remember meeting a property manager who would interview prospective tenants. He’d invite them into his office where he would also have a strategic plate of candy bars on it. Not the little cheapo ones, but the big, king size good ones. If a prospect had little kids, the kids would either ask him or their mom, politely, if they could have a candy bar. However, there were also the parents of little kids who would just dive in to the candy without asking. The latter would never be placed by the manager as he felt his test helped identify those who didn’t care for other’s property.

I put a rental on zillow.

Zillow wanted to take over the entire application and screening process. A sort of automation process that was way off base.

Have gone back to craigslist.

What is the credit rating of each individual? The greater the risk, the higher the deposit.

“Every rental contract I’ve seen was a standard one. I’ve NEVER had an apartment owner say, “You’re white? Well, I’ll give YOU a discount!” And where I live, you can find apartment prices on the Internet. Same with house prices. Don’t think the Internet knows if I am white or black.”

Precisely correct. If this was really happening the owners would have their ass sued and most correctly so. This is all a lie, not a mistake of statistics but just a plain damn lie.
