LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The fast-spreading Omicron variant stoked U.S. interest in better masks for children to ward off COVID-19, and that is adding fuel to an effort that could set the stage for domestic oversight of their quality.
While many U.S. states and schools have since stopped requiring mask-wearing for COVID, disease experts say children will still need high-quality masks for everything from current and future pandemics to seasonal flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) that can cause serious illness and death.
"Every year there are opportunities for masks to make a difference - whether it's in the classroom or in the daycare," said Dr. Steven Krug, an emergency room physician and chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Council on Children and Disasters.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) certifies N95 masks and inspects the facilities that make them. A move is afoot to establish a U.S. standard for high-filtration children's masks, which could set the stage for domestic oversight.
The standard would define mask materials, measurements and filtration qualities. After that, a standards body or government agency would need to support and adopt it. A federal agency would be needed to enforce the standard.
American Mask Manufacturer's Association (AMMA) founder Lloyd Armbrust said success would require ongoing commitment and political pressure.
"These problems are totally solvable, but people have to care long enough," Armbrust said.

Filtration basics…. N95 specification means 95% removal of particles greater than 0.3 micrometers in diameter. This is 300 nanometers. The Covid virus particle is 60-140 nanometers in diameter. This means that the N95 specification has much less than 95% removal of the Covid virus particle unless it is attached to an aerosol particle larger than 300 nanometers.
BTW…. The 300 nanometer number is used as the filtration benchmark in the specification as this is near the size of the smallest bacteria. N95 is not rated to remove discrete virus particles. I've been able to locate no information an removal efficiency of particles in the Covid size range.
N95 filters achieve their 300 nanometer through a combination of particle entrapment and electrolytic charge on the polypropylene fibers that make up the filter's body. Two ways to increase filtration capability. One is to modify the fiber characteristics to increase electrostatic or chemical binding of the target particle or to increase depth of the filter thus giving greater surface area for entrapment. Increasing the depth of the filter increases pressure drop and at some point, inhalation is restricted to the point that a person cannot breath satisfactorily.
Ways used to get around this problem of insufficient lung power to satisfy the human inhalation requirement is to use larger face area filters (reduced filter depth) or powered filters. For example, I've extensively used full face and half face gas masks in the past. In a few instances, I've needed to upgrade from the standard screw on cartridges and go with filter containers about the volume of a loaf of bread.
I looked some 3M data today re. filters for breathing air. In addition to the N95 specification, there are two other greater specifications. One is for 99% and the other at 99.975% removal of 300 nanometer particles. I didn’t go into the details on these two specifications but guess that the 99% filter could be for the loaf of bread sized cartridge and the 99.975% filter would be by a blower powered filter only via a supplied air mask
