Walmart (WMT) is driving up pay for its truckers.
In a blog post Thursday, the nation's largest retailer announced it will be increasing starting salaries for its freight drivers to between $95,000 and $110,000 a year, up from an average starting salary of $87,500, according to a Walmart spokesperson.
"Drivers who have been with Walmart longer can earn even more, based on factors like tenure and location," the blog noted.
The push comes as supply-chain problems further exacerbate an already troubled trucking industry. The American Trucking Association estimates the nation is short about 80,000 drivers.
Walmart has hired 7,000 drivers for its internal fleet during the past two years, while last year hiring 4,500, which is the most in the company's history, said a spokesperson.
Walmart has also launched a "Private Fleet Development Program," a 12-week program taught by established Walmart truckers to train new drivers.
The company is also paying for supply chain associates in the Dallas, Texas, and Dover, Delaware, areas to earn commercial driver's licenses (CDL), which typically cost between $4,000 to $5,000, in order to become professional Walmart drivers.
So far, Walmart has moved 17 workers from its warehouse operations to its training program, with aims to add "400-800 new drivers this year."

Do they have to be vaccinated and wear masks?
Just think of all the college kids with there 200,000 dollars of student loan …making forty grand a year…
worked on an engineering building at RPI in the 1960s…and we got a load of steel from Texas and the driver was a great looking woman….not many women drivers back then…
My solution to BiXidenflation is here!
I used to have a CDL.
Local Walmarts are ~340 miles from a warehouse.
No city traffic.

How much to drive a Horse and Buggy delivery vehicle, owner/operator?
Truckers were paid more than that while working the oil fields in Oklahoma and Texas just a couple of years ago. Heck, McDonald’s workers were earning way over $50K but nobody believes that because it was not reported on the TV.
RPI.....and a fancy truck driving woman.... memories
Back then I interviewed with one company and asked for a example of a route.
They guy said Ft Worth (TX) to Amarillo(TX) to Roswell (NM) and back to Ft Worth.
I asked him how much time has expired and he said “Same day”.
Remember the national speed limit was 55mph back then.
I told him no thanks.
*That was well over a thousand miles for their normal day.
Hiring ex-Amish drivers may not work out so well:

While I understand the law of supply and demand and why truckers are being offered this much money, it makes me both sad and mad. My daughter works 12 hour shifts as a critical care nurse. She is overwhelmed and overworked. She makes less than half that. I know. I know. But.....
Classic example of unnecessary statement.
salary? As in you have a contract with us? You can’t go home yet, we have another trailer you have to deliver because your on salary.
That's what I thought. Perhaps the shortage is the mandates, not a lack of drivers.
A great guy on YouTube shares his trips on videocam. He re recently received a brand new truck from his company. He said he adorned it with a bumper sticker that reads "The Big Guy gets 10%". He says conservatives laugh and liberals don't understand it.
WalMart requires 3 years of accident and infraction free driving experience, plus once you’re hired you get the added bonus of a forward and driver facing dash cam to go with your ELD.
They are very safety conscious now - if you’re 10 minutes from your yard to go home for the night, you have to park and sleep in the truck again. (But they pay you for it.)
For drivers who get a dedicated route, it’s not a bad gig - just really heavy on the supervision. Having been an owner operator for 14 years, that level of control is a hard no for me (not to mention the huge pay cut).
If at least half of American college students left their leftist puppy-mills to instead became truck-drivers, welders, farmers, plumbers or electricians - they, and this country, would be FAR better off.
Driving jobs are a nightmare, and probably need to pay $100k+. I’ve seen amazon delivery people needlessly running up my yard to deliver.
Do the truck drivers have to pay for their own truck maintenance?
When everything is done and said, after all the endless taxes, that’s only about 60k a year. Chump change in this rampant inflation.
That’s how commies think. You Catholic? If you are, try Confession this Saturday. The priest will get a kick out of it.
Never be envious. Push for no more immigration and deporting any of them here illegally.
THAT will allow the labor rates to rise and reach an unsubsidized equilibrium. Nursing has too many immigrants.
Wal-Mart? No.
