The British government will seek to construct eight nuclear power plants and expand domestic oil production in order to ensure energy security amid the global crisis.Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s long-awaited energy strategy will include a major shift towards nuclear power and open up oil exploration in the North Sea in a tacit admission that so-called green energy sources will not be enough in order to secure energy security. The government said that it wants to see a “significant acceleration of nuclear” with the aim of producing 24GW of energy from nuclear by the year 2050, or about a quarter of the nation’s projected electricity demand.
The strategy said that it will come with the creation of a new governmental body, dubbed “Great British Nuclear”, and will see an investment of a £120 million ‘Future Nuclear Enabling Fund’ launched later this month to facilitate the “safe, clean, and reliable source of power”.

"The government said that it will plan to open up eight reactors this decade, saying that the accelerated pace will see the equivalent of one new reactor per year compared to the previous one per decade rate."
They sound serious…
But… but… but… windmills?
Talk is cheap.
From last month...
Note the use of the conditional.
dude, windmills was sooooooo early 2000’s and aren’t green enough to halt the climate change doomsday.
We need compost patties to save the world from our bigfoot size carbon footprint!
I would be amazed - amazed - if the UK Government finally did something right for a change. So I will wait to see what contracts come out.
And one of the reasons that Obama lobbied in Public against them leaving.
Guess who was right?
“They sound serious…”
And they should be thanking PUTIN, for giving them backbone needed to start standing up to the Greens.
Boris will be gone by then and they’ll revert back to green baby green. The watermelons are everywhere.
“However, the green-minded Conservative government said that it hopes that 95 per cent of electricity in Britain will be “low carbon” by the year 2030 through new investments in solar power”
They really need to look where they are on the globe, and at their Seattle-like weather. The panels won’t give them much juice.
Buy stock in uranium mines. It’s the only way out.
Thorium nuclear power stations would be best. I hope UK goes this way. Plus UK has regions in England proper that are ideal for fracking natural gas. Fracking is banned as of now.
green-minded “Conservative” ???????
"But… but… but… windmills?"
They are by no means quitting those yet… ;0)
Can’t they just buy some nuclear power plants from Amazon.com and speed up the process.
“green-minded “Conservative” ???????”
Maybe ‘Green-minded Conservative’ means that they start shedding their ‘green’ a bit, but only when it’s clear that people will freeze to death if they continue. In this case, new nukes, keeping remaining coal plants running, and possibly allowing Fracking. But we’ll see how far he gets...
The future is uranium from seawater. The Japanese and our own national labs have both succeeded in making actual yellow cake. It’s important to note that the fuel cost even in the insanely wasteful PWR reactor is only .65 of a cent per kWh out of that total only 25% is the actual uranium itself the rest is , enrichment, fabrication and transport plus profits. You could double the price of yellow cake and the total cost would only go up a few fractions of a cent. The current price for seawater uranium is around $600 kg that’s double the mined price but even at that price the total cost for a kWh is under a cent. On a btu for btu basis nuclear fuel is the cheapest form of heat humans have ever created. Equal to 30 cents per bbl of crude oil or coal at under ten bucks per tonne. Nothing on this planet touches nuclear fuel for economics of heat. The only reason nukes are expensive is legal tomfoolery via lawfare that the commies use to inflate the costs of every new project. In China where they don’t get a say they can throw up a 2 gigawatt reactor in under 5 years and for less than $1600 kw capex that’s cheaper than any coal plant and on par with gas turbines but nuclear fuel is an order of magnitude cheaper by btu for the heat source. Korea also can and does put up nukes for under $2000 kw capex same.thing they don’t allow the environmentalists to.sue at all. Once the design is approved and standardized that’s it lawfare is over. We could do the same thing here but won’t too much lawyer money to be made on both sides. While.fleecing the rate payers.

Rolls Royce is serious as a heart attack they are going forward with their small PWR modular prebuilt design. They secured funding from the UAE and others to build the first of kind. It should be noted that Rolls makes the reactors for the British Navy their nuke boats have these small PWRs as their power supply. Rolls is using the same reactor design with HALEU instead of HEU that subs use for 40 year core lifetimes. Arguably design, control and operation using HEU is much harder than <20% U235. HALEU cannot go supercritical leading to a RUD...rapid uncontrolled disassembly in the megaton range a HEU sub reactor absolutely can go RUD and K19 the USSR first SLBM sub nearly did only heroic efforts save her. Probably not a good idea for a civy reactor that need to be close to a city.
