HONG KONG—Lu Jiaying hasn’t tested positive for Covid, and hasn’t experienced any symptoms.
But at 7 p.m. on Sunday, the 34-year-old technology worker and resident of central Shanghai, was ordered to board a bus for a mass quarantine center.
Nearly 16 hours later, Ms. Lu, still aboard the bus in a head-to-toe protective suit, hadn’t eaten a bite, sipped any water or gone to the bathroom, a casualty of the chaos that has seized China’s biggest and most prosperous city amid a surge in Covid infections.

Strange to see a few, here, falling for it....again.
It is difficult to shed the psychological addiction of viewing the news as authoritative. Our parents lived by it and we grew up with it. To turn our backs on it is to admit we have been lied to our entire lives.
It is more comfortable for many to simply keep believing the way they have their entire lives than to face the uncertainty of a new reality. Particularly so for those of us entering into or already in their senior years.
Ironically, that might be true.
I believe the original prototype for COVID-19 was 100% fatal in lab animals and in the first humans infected with it. The Chinese thought they had accidently unleased a slate-wiper that could exterminate their entire country.
Naturally, the first response of the bureaucrats in charge was to begin a cover-up. That greatly complicated the assessment of what they were (and still are) dealing with.
The virus was unstable and rapidly mutated into a less-lethal form. Or perhaps it was never as lethal as they thought it was. But even so, they though it was. And some still do.
That conflicting information is why China has shown so many extreme changes in policy.
The advantage of justifying any and all totalitarian measures as a "necessary response to protect public health" has since been recognized by nearly every Government in the world. What an incentive!
