It’s hard to decide which part of this story is more remarkable: that a Magnificent Mile department store now hires dogs to sniff customers for guns? That the guy who got busted by the canines this week was arrested seven months ago for having a pistol in another store nearby? Or that he was on electronic monitoring for allegedly attacking a security guard at yet another Mag Mile department store in January? We’ll let you decide.
Prosecutors say one of the gun-detecting dogs was on duty Monday afternoon when Derrick Latham, 23, walked into Neiman Marcus, 737 North Michigan. The pooch smelled a gun.
The canine handler notified store security to keep an eye on Latham. They were watching as he stuffed a belt and two belt buckles into his jacket and headed out the door without paying, Assistant State’s Attorney Loukas Kalliantasis said.
Security officers stopped Latham and allegedly found a loaded 9-millimeter handgun in his waistband. They also recovered the stolen merchandise, worth $995, five suspected Xanax pills, and 16 counterfeit $100 bills, Kalliantasis alleged.

We'll see how the prosecutor handles it.
[Latham. They were watching as he stuffed a belt and two belt buckles into his jacket and headed out the door without paying]
Yeah, but Socialism. And free stuff by looting.
It’s all good. Just ask the Democrats.
[and 16 counterfeit $100 bills]
OK...
I guess I have a different take on it. I don’t like the concept of businesses going to such measures to stop you from carrying a firearm into the store. Yeah yeah, “private business” and all that. So are gas stations and grocery stores. With the “private” argument they can effectively kill the right to carry anywhere with tactics like this. Anywhere that admits the general public is PUBLIC, they even say so when they are referring to your privacy, when they use the phrase “you should have no expectation of privacy in a public setting”. Really can’t have it both ways.
Gun sniffing dogs.
For some time I have had a concern that gun grabbing, 2nd amendment hating, Democrat run government....like we have now.... would try to train dogs to sniff out and root out guns in a massive door-to-door national gun grab scheme. Even burying your guns probably would not work in this case.
When Republicans controlled government, they should have passed a national law banning the use of animals for any such use by federal officers but alas I am sure I would have been scolded for being a “kooky extremist” for suggesting any such thing would happen 🙄

I’m guessing a free flight halfway across Lake Mich is too much to hope for?
In Chicago / Cook County no crime was committed - the prep is already back on the street.
$995 is a misdemeanor
That's if they don't already get sued for a false hit that "traumatizes" the "victim", or for profiling by racist dogs.
Yeah, just what are those dogs trained on?
What chemicals of gunpowder; there are different formulations?
Gun oil; is it like synthetic automotive oil?
Burned gun powder residue; what are the specific compounds?
Or do the dogs ‘trigger’ at some command from the handler?
Ed’s Red is made from common solvents and lube oils.
the 16 counterfeit bills should get him Federal prison time-—no excuses.
16 counterfeit $100 bills is NOT a misdemeanor.
It is FEDERAL & serious.
They’re trained to smell traditional solvents and greases.
There are all sorts of other lubricants that work.
