Study finds higher homicide risk in homes with handguns

NEW YORK (AP) — Most U.S. gun owners say they own firearms to protect themselves and their loved ones, surveys show. But a study published Monday suggests people who live with handgun owners are shot to death at a higher rate than those who don’t have such weapons at home.

“We found zero evidence of any kind of protective effects” from living in a home with a handgun, said David Studdert, a Stanford University researcher who was the lead author of the Annals of Internal Medicine study.

The study has several shortcomings. For example, the researchers said they could not determine which victims were killed by the handgun owners or with the in-home weapons. They couldn’t account for illegal guns and looked only at handguns, not rifles or other firearms.

The dataset also was limited to registered voters in California who were 21 and older. It’s not clear that the findings are generalizable to the whole state, let alone to the rest of the country, the authors acknowledged.

But some outside experts said the work was well done, important and the largest research of its kind.

“I would call this a landmark study,” said Cassandra Crifasi, a gun violence policy researcher at Johns Hopkins University. “This contributes to our understanding of the potential causal relationship between guns in the home and homicides,” she said.

It is not only weird, it is crap.

Because it does not match gun violence numbers with violence by other means.

For instance, how many people are killed with knives

Or poisoned.

Or beat to death.

Or strangled.

Or pushed down stairs.

I will spare you the dozen or so other ways one can be killed.

The FBI statistics make it very clear that more people are killed with fists, feet or knives than with guns.

In other words, if the gun had not been there the person killed would more than likely been killed by another method by a resident in their home.

People in gun free homes are likely to live in affluent low crime areas. Makes sense actually.

Ya think?

OTOH, they are shot to death by armed intruders at a rate far lower than people who have no handgun in the house.

He looks so smart wearing virus protection equipment. I would trust anything he reported on. NOT. I’m going back to my 1980’s insult of my youth. What a fag.

I’d say then time to end Biden’s and other elites and celebrities armed security details then

Lots more handguns there, than the average citizens home

Since they dont really do anything, get rid of them

You first, elites

Show us you practice what you preach

Firearms ownership data is collected by the state, the state provides private gun ownership data to such researchers. Lots of opportunity to cherry pick desired outcomes when both data collector and researchers agenda merge.

GIGO.

Summary: 12 per 100k in handgun homes die from violence perpetrated with handguns while 8 per 100k in non registered gun homes die the same way.

Correlation (registered handgun home & number of deaths) does not mean causation.

Tell me how many people die in registered handgun homes from those registered handguns compared to how many die in non-registered handgun homes by violence from use of non-registered handguns as well as how many die from violence from use of registered handguns. Then tell me the rates of justified use of force for those categories.

That would be a meaningful resukt, but alas, it would tell a scary story that won’t be told.

Lets disarm the White House first then.

Just get rid of their armed security. All of our top leaders, no more armed guards. Disband the Capitol police.

Okay. Now, take Chicago, Detroit, Compton, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and New Jersey out of the mix. How about then?

So you’re more likely to get shot in a bad neighborhood.

Got it.

Teddy Kennedy’s Oldsmobile killed more people than all of my firearms, combined.

Well, I can only say that for the ones I bought new. My Mosin-Nagant May have participated in killing Nazis. Given the regime at the time, probably commies, too.
