US fuel economy rules will soon require 49 mpg average

The Biden administration Friday rolled out final emissions rules that will require cars and trucks to have an average fuel economy of 49 miles per gallon in just a few years.

At a press conference unveiling the new rules, which are close to those initially unveiled in December, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg portrayed them as a way to save drivers money and make America less dependent on foreign oil.

The Trump administration had rolled back similarly aggressive fuel economy standards that had been put in place during the Obama administration.

I guess trucks will have to be the size of a Fiat 500.

This is insanity. Not even a Toyota Prius hybrid electric gets that kind of mileage.

Oh this is easy. Just create a program to take back fuel hogs and replace them with Electric Vehicles at taxpayer expense.

Done and dusted.

It’s simple. Just put a 45 mph speed limit on the Interstates...and restrict the size of all passenger cars to no more than 1000 lbs. Of course, a 2 person car driving 45 mph won’t fit many families but maybe we need to ban children as well. One can’t be too green!

Average real world gas mileage for a Fiat 500 is 36 mpg

This is about an average of all cars sold by a car company, not about an individual car’s gas mileage. IMHO this is why Ford and GM are heavily promoting EV’s now — to give them some wiggle room for gas hogs (that people like).

Can someone point me to the section in the Constitution that stipulates a federal power to dictate the average gas mileage of vehicles sold by a given manufacturer? I can’t find it. Thanks in advance.

I’ve seen very little about it, but the death rate in accidents has gone up as cars get lighter. If the mantra is, if it saves JUST ONE LIFE then making cars lighter is not the way to go. This is insane. The good thing is, it has gotten so insane that this particular idiocy may go away because the Democrats have gotten insane across the board. They’ve turned up the temperature on the frog too high.

Our 2018 Honda CR-V allegedly gets 32 MPG on the highway...

When I drive on the highway to another state (home base in Montana) we cruse at 86-87. Passing speed on a 70 MPH two lane road is 95ish. Of course we get 24 MPG with this type of driving.

On a side note: in mid-December we purchased a 2009 26’ RV based on a Ford V-10 E-450 platform just north of Salt Lake City. We picked it up two weeks ago and drove the 450 miles home...

‘Sunny’ as we call it, likes 70 MPH on the highways...

The CRV following Sunny at 70 MPH got 42 MPG!!!! A record!

We filled up in Dillon, MT. Sunny took $203.45 of regular. It’s going to be a great summer!

Yes.
This has been a scourge of car industry for as far as I remember (Carter?). Average fleet gas mileage.
For years, the cars have a lot lover CAFE than Trucks, so we now have SUVs (technically trucks).
Obama “saved” us, by mandating this incredible CAFE.
The only way to get there now is to make EV’s.
See, GM, Ford just gave up on normal cars. They produce SUV’s and other gas guzzlers and try to push some EVs to balance it.
