DETROIT (AP) — New vehicles sold in the U.S. will have to average at least 40 miles per gallon of gasoline in 2026, up from about 28 mpg, under new federal rules unveiled Friday that undo a rollback of standards enacted under President Donald Trump.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said its new fuel economy requirements are the strongest to date and the maximum the industry can achieve over the time period. They will reduce gasoline consumption by more than 220 billion gallons over the life of vehicles, compared with the Trump standards.
They’re expected to decrease carbon dioxide emissions — but not as much as some environmentalists want — and raise new vehicle prices in an industry already pressed by inflation and supply chain issues.
For the current model year, standards enacted under Trump require the fleet of new vehicles to get just under 28 miles per gallon in real-world driving. The new requirements increase gas mileage by 8% per year for model years 2024 and 2025 and 10% in the 2026 model year.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, whose department includes NHTSA, said the rules also will help strengthen national security by making the country less dependent on foreign oil and less vulnerable to volatile gasoline prices.
But auto dealers say more stringent requirements drive up prices and push people out of an already expensive new-car market. NHTSA projects that the new rules will raise the price of a new vehicle in the 2029 model year by $1,087.

Time to invest in a really good pair of waking shoes when the entire auto industry collapses.
NHTSA - another agency which needs to be completely eliminated.
Where are the Republicans?
Thanks Putin for all this green ‘research’ behind these stupid mandates.
We got a new Jeep last year to tow a travel trailer.
We were going to sell my Lexus that is in great condition with 100k miles on it.
We decided to keep it. Even with used car prices being high, I like having another solid car. Hopefully, we won’t have to buy one one a very long time.
This is the crux of the problem with caving to leftists. They're never satisfied. You may think caving to them shuts them up, but it never does.
How often do you hear the leftists applaud the car manufacturers for the fact that cars get way better gas mileage now than they did 20 or 30 years ago? How often do you hear them say they're glad the fuel injector replaced the carburetor?
This is what happens when people who know jack squat about automotive technology have the power to issue decrees that the automotive technologists have to obey, or die trying.
My MOTORCYCLES get 40-45 MPG.
Cars will be motorcycle size................
Fours years for car MFG’s are not a lot of time to prepare for such a large increase.
So if I take my Hemi Ram 1500 to the dealer they can just put in the 40mpg chip after removing the 16 mpg one? Cool. Fidiots!
With new pickups from barebones $30k to full blinged $75k and getting 28mpg, this requirement should about double the price. A large percentage of rural folks have at least 1 pickup and typically a 4 wheel drive. It’s kind of a have to have out here.
Kneeling in front of nanzi.
If Deep State can’t keep us from driving one way, they’ll do it another...
we have my elderly mil’s subaru with about 50,000 miles on it.....we don’t need it, but its pre black box type recorders and its in excellent shape....
So, if a Republican is elected i 2024, I guess the standards will be lowered back. What a great country!
God I HATE these people. Every single day they impose their wills on us. Screw them! They kill the fossil fuel industry, go begging around the world for more oil when we have plenty, and now their solution to the problem THEY CAUSED is to force us into lightweight, dangerous, underpowered, and expensive vehicles.
Why can’t they just leave us ALONE and let the market sort out what we can buy according to our needs, wants, and budget?
GD communism.
