Belarus at breaking point: How Putin’s war threatens Lukashenko’s fragile grip on power

Dozens of statements from ordinary trackmen and line workers, rail hands and IT specialists, conductors and engineers showed the depth and breadth of opposition in Belarus to Russia’s war, as well as towards Mr Lukashenko.

“I know these guys – they are drivers, security guards and maintenance crews,” Franak Viacorka, an adviser to Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, tells The Independent in an interview.

...While the war may help Mr Putin consolidate his hold over Russian society and politics, for Belarus and its autocratic leader the conflict could unravel an already shaky calm imposed by force.

Polls conducted by the Chatham House think tank showed that more than 55 per cent of Belarusians oppose the war, along with Russia’s use of their country to dispatch troops and fire missiles into Ukraine, and nearly 97 per cent are against deploying any domestic forces across the border.

“The absolute majority are against the war and against deployment of troops – that includes elites, people and army,” says Hanna Liubakova, a Belarusian opposition journalist.

“The general attitude is that Belarusians should not go there and kill their neighbours. And not be murdered or killed for Putin.”

Belarus is among only four nations around the world that have voted in support of Russia on UN General Assembly resolutions regarding Ukraine – along with Syria, North Korea, and Eritrea.

Time for Georgia and Chechens to kick Putins goons
out of their countries while Russia had overplayed
their hand with a poorly planned and executed
invasion.

I don’t think Russia can handle a second front
and a wider war.

It would serve Russia right to have to lose
all their in gotten gains.

Polls conducted by the Chatham House think tank

Chatham House is a British establishment hobby horse funded by the Queen's purse, governed by the House of Lords, and staffed mostly by third world immigrants...no thanks.

It is interesting that Putin is withdrawing from all of the fronts that have to be supported from Belarus.

I think the worry is that Lukashenko could collapse, and they could have a second unwinnable war on their hands.

That’s right: You only accept polls from TASS and anything with .ru as the source.

Maybe this is what is driving the withdrawal of Russian forces from around Kyiv and Chernihiv. Maybe they are on their way out of Belarus, due to political situation there.

Maybe sanctions are also biting them, as well as fear of escalation. There is probably a good bit of revulsion/shame about the brutality being inflicted.

It would sure be something if this war resulted in regime change in Belarus, and Belarus fleeing to the West along with the Ukraine.

Get to work IC.

Incredible. Until a decade ago most Belarusians did not have much sense of nationhood. But now, thanks to Putin’s interference, they feel increasingly belarusian!

The problem is that the Chechens are on Putin’s side in this war.

And in Georgia, the lands taken from Georgia were really different nations, the south Ossetia being Alani like the north Ossetia. And Abkhazia being Abkhaz, a caucasian nation.

Chechen puppet goons are on Putin’s side after he totally crushed Grozny in 1994 and a second time a few years later. Systematically destroyed like Mariupol has been. Puppet government of criminal types installed by Putin backers. There are now Chechen patriots fighting with Ukraine while Putin ships in his viscious good squads of Chechens. I believe you are right about Georgia, but were plebecites ever held?

Good to see pro freedom Freepers gathered here and outing another Potty propagandist like mac_truck. They show up regularly at Ukraine articles posted here.
