A Lebanon, Pa., police lieutenant killed responding to a call Thursday afternoon was just a month away from retirement after spending 40 years on the force, the city’s mayor said.
Lt. William Lebo, 63, had a May 1, 2022, retirement date planned, Mayor Sherry Capello said during a news conference Friday about a shooting that also landed two of Lebo’s coworkers in the hospital.
Lebanon County District Attorney Pier Hess Graf said officers were called to the 1100 block of Forest Street in Lebanon at 3:30 p.m. Thursday for a domestic dispute that turned out to be a burglary. Four uniformed officers entering the home were “immediately” met with gunfire, she said.
Travis Shaud, 34, had broken into a relative’s home, Hess Graf said, and opened fire on the responding police officers.
Officers returned fire, killing Shaud, Hess Graf said. Multiple firearms were found around the home. Shaud had a criminal history that included assault, she said.
Injured were Lebanon officers Ryan Adams, hospitalized in stable condition, and Derek Underkoffler, listed in critical but stable condition. Both are 32 years old with seven years on the force, Capello said.
Emergency crews tried life-saving measures on Lebo, but he died at the scene, the DA said.
“Every time a police officer responds to a call, he risks his life. Every single time,” Hess Graf said. Lebo “made the ultimate sacrifice to protect his community.”

the perpetrator is described as "emotionally disturbed".
Further evidence that we do NOT have a "firearms public health crisis" but a MENTAL ILLNESS public health crisis!

Isn't it nice that once we defund the police we'll have young social workers responding to calls like this.
A Lieutenant, that age, that close to retirement, could have easily found acceptable excuses to be tied up in the office and unavailable for calls. But he was there out front, with men half his age.
I hate reading about dead police (or military), either just starting on the job, or almost retired. It seems so much more sad in both cases.
This all falls at the feet of the Democrat Party. I wonder how much they get from our open borders. They have to be getting a cut of the drug sales, the human trafficking money.
Their ranks will be decimated and thinned-out, within months, until the few remaining quit.
Note the presence of Puddin' Pop (far left).
54 cops, lost their lives in 2019. Guess how many unarmed black folks lost their lives unjustifiable due to,cops? 2 and in both those cases the cops were convicted.
Th3 left scream about “systemic racism” in the police force, yet out of millions of encounters all across the nation, violent encounters, villent encounters with drugged up even mentsl,y unstable individuals, only 2 unarmed black people were killed unjustifiably all that year. But 54 cops were murdered by criminals that year.
Correction: September 2009.
RIP Lt. William Lebo
Soon there will be no police, only defensive perimeters.
More on the perp here.

And the state of PA was letting this guy run around loose...
No one will be coming to these calls.
Social workers will remain safely back in their offices, with visits by appointment only.
What police forces still remain will arrive hours or days later to clean up the mess and write reports. No one will read the reports.
With proof of vaccination, masks, and social distancing required.

A protection-from-abuse order was filed against Shaud in 2021 for physical abuse of his infant daughter.
