Look at the contracts. If they say payment is to be made in dollars or whatever and the decree specifies payments shall be made in rubles then that is a material breach of contract. That is on Putin not the buyers.

This has long term implications regarding the reliability of Russia as a supplier. If purchasers think that Russia may try to change the terms of the contract arbitrarily they will think twice about signing contracts with the Russians.

Joe Biden said the ruble had turned to rubble. I wonder who wrote that line for him?

Did you read the contract? I believe they all specify the payment terms and typically it will say USD or EUR. So he is trying to change the terms. Which he is welcome to do upon contract expiration.

Perhaps a stupid question, but can ‘unfriendly countries’ pay in Euros or dollars? Isn’t Russia cut off from the SWIFT system? I guess could deliver pallets of cash, but then Russian airspace is closed.

The current contracts are well below current market price.

Paying in roubles will be a very great deal cheaper than buying at market.

Did the original contract stipulate that payments had to be made only in rubles? No, it stipulated that euros are the accepted remuneration.

Question: Your screen name is Navy Patriot. Did you serve in the navy of some country? If so, which country?

Russia will view it as breach of contract

Civilization is at war with Russia. Contracts are out the window at this point. There is no solution that will satisfy these thugs because they believe they have to control every county they border. So, Russia will do what they feel they need to do and the west will do what it needs to do. It will suck for a while, and then we'll win.

contract smontract

It’s called “war”
The west thinks it is free to do whatever it wants and Russia just has to take it.

Sounds a lot like some democrats I’ve heard of.

It seems to me that Pooty Poot’s new rule is that Germany has to set up an account at the Gazprom bank. German can send Euros into this account to pay for Rooskie natural gas. This bank then converts the Euros into Pooty’s Rooskie Roubles, and everyone is happy.

What am I missing? Is the Gazprom bank’s Euros to>>> Roubles conversion done at rip-off rates?
