The pursuit of ignorance
TED TALKS ^ | Sep 24, 2013 | Stuart Firestein

An educated man knows the extent of his education; a wise man knows the extent of his ignorance.

"It is very difficult to find a black cat in a dark room, especially when there is no cat!" This is a particularly apt description of science and how science works.

Where there is no morals, fools join the Fabian Society.

Where there is no discernment, proponent of murderous ideologies are held up as examples.

The vast majority of TED Talks that I have watched were very Leftist with almost no exceptions I can think of. I thought the subjects would be interesting and watched a few, but time after time, the Leftist agenda would shine through.

I gave up even clicking on them.

I came to view it as a bunch of Leftists preaching to their choir about given subjects.

I love this one:

Color-coded surgery
Quyen Nguyen, as a student, questioned the surgical procedures to adapt the development of fluorescently labeled probes for molecular navigation during surgery.
Surgeons are taught from textbooks which conveniently color-code the types of tissues, but that’s not what it looks like in real life — until now. At TEDMED Quyen Nguyen demonstrates how a molecular marker can make tumors light up in neon green, showing surgeons exactly where to cut.

Their first collaborative effort yielded a “smart” probe that makes tumors margins fluoresce, or “glow” and thus easier for surgeons to see and remove accurately during surgery. Their most recent joint effort resulted in another type of probe that can make nerves “glow” during surgery, thus helping surgeons repair injured nerves and avoid inadvertent injury.

Quyen Nguyen uses molecular probes that make tumors — and just the tumors — glow, as an extraordinary aid to surgeons.

The TED BAXTER TALKS are notoriously leftist, with the attempt to make foolish behavior look profound. “Defund the Police” at a TED BAXTER TALK would be hailed an invention of genius, stupidity so profound and obvious that it looks glaringly smart. Yes, they are all “ARTISTS.” They are there not for others but for their own vain and righteous cause: for themselves. Skydiving without a parachute is what it is, in hopes you make a big splash and look stunningly profound. You are free to free float in idiocy until the day of implementation, the day of action.

What bugs me is the same self-righteous, very smug, and frequently condescending but know-it-all attitude of the speakers. It's like they were all trained at the same NPR School of Public Speaking.

I like the concept. I just gave up watching them after being irritated time and time again.

A very important function of (real) journalists is to educate themselves enough to understand the academic publications of scientists but not so much that they become biased towards a particular hypothesis. This is the current problem with climate science which is still very immature but is treated as settled science by most trade journalists.

One area of AI research is the training of NLP algorithms to detect when trade journalists add hyperbole and speculation to their interpretations of scientific papers. This provides an unbiased editor function and prevents the exploitation of uninformed readers based on emotional rather than rational information.

Yeah, that’s the very irritating accent they all adopt!

like they were all trained at the same NPR School of Public Speaking.

Well…..they were. Didn’t you get that memo? It’s called The Karen School, with majors in “You Should “, “You Need To”, and “You Can’t “, and a minor in Intolerance in Action.
