He came, he saw, he confused.
Joe Biden’s call-to-arms speech in Poland was long on soaring rhetoric about the virtues of democracy but woefully short on what more the West will do to help Ukraine defeat the Russian invasion. But by the time he got to the finish, most of that was forgotten.
What mattered most and what will be remembered for a long time was a single line the president of the United States said about the president of Russia: “For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power.”
In the context of the speech and the slaughter of Ukrainian civilians, it’s impossible to understand that line as anything other than a call for regime change, a move that would dramatically raise the stakes with Russia at a time when Biden has been at pains to lower them.
It also raises the question of whether toppling Putin, a subject never before mentioned by the White House, is suddenly the new policy of the United States and NATO.
Ah, no.
Shortly after the speech, a Biden aide told pool reporters that “the president’s point was that Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region. He was not discussing Putin’s power in Russia, or regime change.”
Unbelievable. So what Biden so clearly said is not at all what he meant.
How in the hell can a line like that, so explicit that it could potentially lead to World War III, get into a presidential address if the plain meaning wasn’t the intent?
Then again, maybe it wasn’t in there at all. Maybe the idea just popped into Biden’s addled brain and he added it on the fly.

A: I can't, I'm not the President.
The only thing Biden’s speech made clear is that he has even less control over government policy than we thought a few days ago.
The reaction on the part of the white house staff demonstrates dismay bordering on hysterics.
They deserve it for installing a swamp creature rather than a statesman.
One word summation = FLOP
Is “democracy” the form of government where the Democrats steal elections and then have their Big Tech allies ban any speech telling the truth about the stolen election?
it has to be a challenge for the other major powers.
everyone knows the US is socially facturing, and a faction has managed to seize power but is still not quite secure. additionally, they appear to be ideologues. they would rather a few nukes get used and november turn out ok than not.
normal legal mechanisms to remove clearly incompetent leader are broken, and in addition no one wants kamala as president.
all this would be entertaining except we have a big military and nukes and appear intent on starting WWIII. our sanctions already will have permanent negative large repercussions, including on us.
We all know who needs to go. And he can take KToe with him.
Sure wasn’t, “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”
“Q: Mr Biden, can you explain what the President of the United States meant when he said “For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power.”
A. I cannot respond without consulting with my cabal of oligarchs. When they decide what I should say I will let you know.
99% chance it was unscripted. The question is whether it was just a random thought from Joe or whether he blabbed something that’s being seriously discussed by his handlers.
Yep.
Mouth hanging open.
Mind not engaged.
At least Captain Pike was a hero.
He blabs the truth. It is more than likely being discussed...
